Rubio, last week: we are in a civilizational war against Iran.
Rubio, today: wow this city in Central Asia with a bunch of Persian architecture sure seems pretty cool, wonder who built it

Imagine thinking that the way to avoid the Balkanisation of Britain is by inciting ethnic and religious hatred and carrying out ethnic cleansing. These people are incredibly stupid.

Rupert Lowe is quite open about the fact that, if his party ever took power, it would provoke chaos and rioting and the result would be 'incredibly painful'. He wants to be an English Radovan Karadzic. You'd have to really hate Britain and England to vote for this maniac.

Am late to post my @NewStatesman column but here it is.
I ask why stories from ancient Greece--from Anne Carson to Marco Rubio to Christopher Nolan--are trickling back into public consciousness. In my opinion, it's because they illuminate our savage world. newstatesman.com/politics/20…

For @TheIdeasLetter I wrote about Marc Bloch and the challenge of writing synthetic and structural history. Featuring the Annales, Pirenne, Keynes, fin de siècle social science, and the generalizing ambitions of Carlo Ginzburg and the micro-historians.

Chris Wickham, a productive and highly regarded British historian of the Middle Ages, has passed away today.
These are some of his key works.

So very sorry to hear about the death of Chris Wickham - one of the great medieval historians of our times and a good friend. He was a brilliant, ground-breaking and deeply insightful man from whom I (and many others) learned a great deal. And a terrific writer too... #RIP

Publication Day! "The Spirit of the British Constitution: Parliamentary Reform from the Civil War to the Great Reform Act" (@PrincetonUPress) has now been released in the US. The idea for the book started with an article I drafted on the Tories and the Septennial Act in 2016 (published in HPT in 2019), so one could say that it has been a decade in the making. But I completed this book as a proud faculty member of @ufhamilton since 2023. I would like to thank all my friends and colleagues at Hamilton, and around the world. press.princeton.edu/books/ha…
