Post-MLB lockout leverage may have shifted from owners to players. Since the National League World Series team, the Milwaukee Brewers, is often chastised for having a paltry payroll.
AL champions — Cleveland Guardians or Tampa Bay Rays — both are effectively small-market teams.
The Dodgers, swept by the Milwaukee Brewers 4-0 in the NLCS, are similar to another back-to-back championship Los Angeles team, the 1987 and 1988 Lakers. Swept by the Detroit Pistons in the 1989 NBA Finals.
There have only four three-peat teams in MLB history.
Smart team-player move here from Rep. Angie Craig, campaigning for ex-Minnesota Democratic Senate primary rival.
There's a non-trivial chance the likely Democratic governor, Amy Klobuchar, could appoint Craig to the Senate seat she'll have just vacated.

#MNSEN: Former primary rival Angie Craig is hitting the campaign trail for Peggy Flanagan. Craig will help kick off door-knocking Saturday in Burnsville, which is in her House district, per Flanagan's campaign.
Giants-Commanders 27-27 game is the first tie since Sept. 28, 2025. When Green Bay and Dallas finished the game 40-40.
The late Chicago Bears Coach Mike Ditka considered a 2004 Senate bid in Illinois when the Republican nominee dropped out.
Ditka would have faced state Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee.

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott might have taken a hint from Republican predecessor Jim Douglas. Or former Gov. Chris Sununu in next-door New Hampshire.
Both retired after winning four two-year terms. Now Scott faces strong Democratic 2026 headwinds in his re-election bid, per polls.

Kansas open-seat governor's race may be breaking late for Democrats.
GOP nominee Ty Masterson had led Dem rival Cindy Holscher since the August primaries. Now she's got a small lead in polls.
KS governorship has been split evenly between the parties over the past 40 years.

Bub Carrington admits the Wizards tanked for AJ Dybantsa 😅
"We haven't been told to be the best version of ourselves. We were held back because we were trying to get AJ Dybantsa. That's no secret"

The political trajectory of Kansas's last Democratic senator, George McGill, reflected his era.
In 1930 beat an appointed Republican as President Hoover sank in popularity. McGill won a full, six-year term in 1932. But lost in 1938 as FDR suffered major political setbacks.
Ironic that a Kansas Democrat has a legit shot at winning a Senate race, which hasn't happened since 1932.
But the governorship, which will have been evenly split over 40 years when this term ends, is leaning Republican. Even in what's looking like a strong Democratic year.

Awkward symmetry in Florida statewide races: Dems criticize GOP Moody for refusing a Senate debate with Nixon, while the GOP blasts Dem "chicken" Jolly for refusing Donalds debate. But when you criticize the other team, you're criticizing your own people, too.
ME02 is turning into a persistent House Democratic headache.
Retiring Rep. Jared Golden (D) twice recently sided with Republicans on key procedural votes. He also backs Trump tariffs vs. Canada, muddling Dem messaging.
Ex-Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) favored to win the open seat.

Roger Simon was THE marquee columnist at Politico when I came to cover Congress as a young (ish) hire in the late 00s… He was extraordinarily encouraging, knew how to throw a punch and was a mensch in his comportment, outlook and style. He will be missed.
Former Sen. Scott Brown has lost to three senators, two current and one former/possibly future.

Rep. Chris Pappas, the New Hampshire Democratic Senate primary winner, is the 12th House member in the 2026 election cycle to run in the general election for a statewide office.
Sixteen House members lost primary bids for statewide office this year.
With second losing Senate bid since moving to New Hampshire from Massachusetts, ex-Sen. Scott Brown (R) will be known as a political one-hit wonder.
Though it was a huge hit — nabbing seat of 46-year Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and changing Obama health care plan course.
