Honoring Deputy Katherine Frank 🌹 Katherine Frank had served with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office for a little over two years. Those who worked with her described a quiet strength, humility, and a genuine readiness to show up for the people who needed help. On the evening of October 9, 2026, she and other deputies responded to a home in western Sioux Falls to serve a mental health hold. Gunfire broke out. Deputy Frank, 26, was critically wounded. She remained in the hospital for three days, surrounded by family, before she passed away on October 12. In a final act of service, she became an organ donor. Before joining the sheriff’s office in June 2024, she had worked at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Colleagues and community members have spoken of her kindness, her sense of humor, and the mark she left in a short time. A public memorial was held outside the Law Enforcement Center in Sioux Falls the night of her death, and her funeral service is scheduled for Monday, October 19, at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. The suspect, Brandon Oetken, has been charged in connection with the shooting. Deputy Frank is remembered as the first Minnehaha County deputy to die from a shooting in the line of duty in the agency’s modern history.
