Who inspire me every day.
Please join in keeping Pope Leo in your prayers as he continues to heal. Let’s also take a moment to honor surgeon-scientists like Dr. Rocco, whose innovation is transforming lung cancer treatment and improving survivability in our lifetime.

Here is some helpful context on his diagnosis and why there is a lot of reason for hope:

We can tame one of the deadliest remaining cancers if proper research funding is invested. I am confident of this because of the progress made in just the last decade.
⚕️Thanks in great part to the research, treatments, and clinical education developed by @AATSHQ thoracic surgical oncologists I am privileged to work with every day, lung cancer is evolving into a treatable condition.
📈The Outlook: Thanks to these medical advances, if reports from the Vatican are accurate about his early-stage diagnosis, the 5-year survival rate for this condition is now around 80%-90%. Just 10 years ago, even for an early Stage 1 diagnosis like this, that was closer to 60%.
💉Modern Treatments: Over the last decade, cancer researchers including surgeons have made incredible strides in the fight against lung cancer. Today, treatments often include neoadjuvant therapy (medication or immunotherapy given before surgery to shrink the tumor)…
the body gets plenty of oxygen. A person can live a full, normal life with four lobes… or even just one lung.
🫁The Surgery: He underwent a lobectomy—the surgical removal of one section (a lobe) of the lung. Humans have five lung lobes total (three on the right, two on the left). The lungs are remarkably adaptable, and after healing, the remaining tissue expands to ensure…
🩺The Diagnosis: Pope Leo was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer that historically has been very difficult to treat.
