Zia Yusuf tonight: "As Home Secretary I will immediately shut down the asylum system." He isn't Home Secretary. He's Reform's spokesperson for Home Affairs. Worth saying before anything else. Now look at what he has put on the table so far. In February: a UK Deportation Command modelled on ICE, able to hold 24,000 people at a time and deport up to 288,000 a year. Leave the European Convention on Human Rights. Scrap indefinite leave to remain. In August: Operation Fortress. Royal Marines landing people on French beaches if France refuses. His words: "If France plays ball, they will be disembarked in ports. And if France doesn't, they will be landed on the beaches anyway." France called it a violation of its sovereignty. This week, in a post reported by HuffPost on Friday: Marines deployed with orders to "DO NOT LET A SINGLE INVADER REACH OUR SHORES". And: "If people smugglers resist, our boys will be authorised to use lethal force." Tonight: "I will clear the asylum backlog by deporting everyone in it." The backlog is people whose claims haven't been decided. Some of them will be refugees. You can't lawfully put someone on a plane to persecution or torture. The Refugee Convention and Article 3 of the ECHR say so. Reform's answer is to leave the ECHR, which is a different promise from the one in the tweet. You can also only deport people to countries willing to take them. A lot of the backlog comes from places that won't. None of tonight's pledge is in Reform's First 100 Days booklet. I've checked. An ICE-style force. Marines with lethal force authorised. A promise to remove everyone in the system whatever their claim. Put the pieces together and ask where that ends. Yusuf is a danger. He would see black and brown people shot dead in the street.
