I vaguely remember a 20+ year old commercial (for PAC Bell?)
It shows one person in a suit talking glowingly about the cloud
Cuts to another executive talking glowingly about the information superhighway
Pans to another person talking about the future of information
Then it cuts to a stressed out technician in the basement with a bunch of wires in the background: “if I don’t get this network up in 30 minutes…I’m a DEAD MAN” 😳
That technician in the basement was my role model
I’ll bet there’s a network engineer in Portugal today feeling like that…

BREAKING:
Australia changed foreign student visa rules today. No new bill. No noise. No years of court fights.
Effective NOW.
Visa hopping is over.
▶ foreign students can no longer bring a partner or child.
▶ renewals must be offshore. Leave, apply, then return.
▶ visitor visas can no longer switch into a student visa onshore.
Australia rewrote rules on a Friday.
One Nation is gaining ground on immigration. Labor responded. Government feared the public.
That’s the power of a credible third-party alternative: major parties have to listen.
Meanwhile, America remains stuck. Lawmakers don’t fear the public. Rogue judges rule the country.

If a private school stinks, nobody has to go to it.
If a public school stinks, some kids are forced to go to it, and the most powerful pressure group in education will do everything it can to prevent them from going elsewhere. I'm more concerned about that.
New: We’re reporters, not teachers. We have no business running a private school. But to show you just how easy it is to start one, we decided to test the process ourselves. propub.li/4hUReS5

So the police lied to Nigel Farage by telling him that the cameras didn't capture Kerry after he tried to set his house on fire, despite there being plenty of footage of him.
In doing so, Kerry was allowed to walk away with no charges or investigation despite there being more than enough evidence to do so.
He then went on to murder Ann Widdecombe.
Wow.
🚨 SUMMARY: Ann Widdecombe's murder suspect Joshua Kerry has been charged with a terror offence against Nigel Farage
- It comes after Counter Terror Police reopened an investigation following Widdecombe's murder into an attempted firebombing at Farage’s home in April 2025
- Farage’s partner Laure Ferrari came home to find the front door damaged with a chisel or a crowbar and an empty can of lighter fuel in the porch, which had been squirted over the door
- Farage believes the attacker was disturbed by a neighbour who had three large dogs and leaves for work at about the time the attack happened
- Police interviewed Farage and Ferrari and seized 74 hours of CCTV from around the property
- Detectives reviewed the footage but failed to identify the suspect and later closed the investigation, telling Farage the cameras had not captured them
- When Counter Terror Police revisited the footage after Widdecombe's murder, they found the suspect and their car had actually been captured "over an extended period"
- The detective who initially reviewed the footage is now being investigated by the IOPC over a potential "missed opportunity to protect the public"
- Tonight, the CPS charged Kerry with preparing terrorist acts against Farage and others following a "hugely intensive" Counter Terror Police investigation

Talked to a Stanford prof last night who told me that AI has led to students all acing all the homeworks, never showing up to office hours, and then failing the final exams in-person.
So in response the department is changing the TA's purpose, by eliminating office hours and requiring students meet with TAs 1:1 and walking them through each coding assignment to demonstrate they actually understand what's going on in the code.

The most hard-hitting 2 sentences in all of talent development research:
The best career advice for young people is to just focus relentlessly on 3 things:
1. Get skilled. Technical skills, writing skills, people-orchestration skills, everything.
2. Get involved contributing to a mission you're aligned with. It doesn't have to be pure bliss and your contribution doesn't have to match your top strengths exactly. But at the end of the day you have to feel some pride in what you did or what you learned. If you can find something like that while becoming skilled in a number of different ways then you'll find ways to increasingly wrap your skill profile around it (and you'll find/develop strengths in your skill profile that you never expected).
3. Pick up momentum. If you do (1) and (2) right then you've got direction and potential and all that's left is to sprint forwards and achieve it. The more momentum you pick up, the better you get, the more real value you produce, the more opportunities you create, the more you get noticed, the more value you capture into your own life, the more effort you want to put in... you create a virtuous cycle with so much momentum behind it that it becomes an unstoppable virtuous cyclone.

My best moment as a 5th grade teacher was giving up after several days of attempting to teach "partial quotients division" (don't ask), closing the door and teaching long division. I'll never forget the look on one kid's face that suggested, "You knew this the entire time?!"
People have heard about the phonics vs triple-queuing fiasco but there is a similar issue in math where ed school ideologues have stigmatized the normal and necessary work of drilling novice students in the fundamentals.

Poor black people are owed 1.) the foundational public good of public safety, without which no other virtues can be cultivated, 2.) the best pedagogy that we have available to teach in safe, orderly environments.
Neither of these goods will equalize outcomes -- it will not be close in any of our lifetimes or our children's lifetimes -- but the adequate provision of both will satisfy a duty that is owed to them. That will be justice.
All other forms of ostensible aid that subvert and corrupt the integrity of these goods under the guise of pursuing "equity" harm the ostensible recipients and corrupt institutions in a manner that inflicts global harm to their functioning.

Kumon and other successful after-school tutoring organizations always use traditional drill and practice to catch kids up in math.
I once attended a lecture by a well-known math ed guru, who was selling the "new way" to teach math.
My colleague asked her: "Why do you think places like Kumon always use traditional teaching - like math drills and worksheets? If your approach is so much better, why don't they use your approach?"
She replied: "It's nostalgia. It makes parents feel good to see things being taught the way they were taught."
The real reason is that Kumon is a paid service. They will lose business if they do not deliver a product that works.
Public schools do not face such consequences. They can just keep doing whatever they want, listening to the gurus, and buying their products. And parents have to keep sending their kids.
This is the sad tragedy of public education.

The current student loan discourse is a good illustration of how the leftist mind can only comprehend 2 states of being: subsidized and banned. The entire continuum between those extremes remains utterly incomprehensible to them.
