Parkinson’s Law – Why the State Bureaucracy Grows When the Work Shrinks In 1955, a British naval historian wrote a joke for The Economist. Seventy years later, it remains one of the most accurate descriptions of the modern state ever written. Everyone knows the slogan: work expands to fill the time available. Almost no one knows the mechanism underneath it. That mechanism explains Europe. 1. The evidence. Between 1914 and 1928, the Royal Navy lost two thirds of its largest warships. Over the same years the Admiralty – the office that ran the ships – grew by three quarters. There were fewer ships and more men behind desks. Then there was the Colonial Office, which kept growing while the colonies left one by one. It was hiring while the empire was shrinking. 2. The first mechanism. An official who feels overworked has three choices. He can resign, he can share the work with a colleague, or he can ask for two subordinates. He never chooses the colleague, because a colleague is a rival. Two subordinates are a rank. So one tired man becomes three. Then each of the two subordinates feels tired. 3. The second mechanism. Seven people now do what one did, and they keep each other busy with drafts, approvals, and comments on the approvals. Everyone works hard, and nothing is produced. You have been in this meeting. You have been copied on this email. You have watched three people sign the form that one person filled in. 4. The law of triviality. Parkinson noticed that a committee will approve a nuclear reactor in minutes, because nobody understands it. The same committee will debate the bicycle shed for an hour, because everybody does. Bureaucracy does not avoid the important question by accident. It avoids it by design – the small question carries no risk, and on the big one, someone’s name goes on the decision. 5. The ratchet. A business that fails closes. A department that fails gets a bigger budget, because the problem is now bigger. Failure is the bureaucracy’s best argument for itself. This is why the state never shrinks on its own: every problem it does not solve becomes a new office for solving it. 6. The civilizational lesson. Burnham described the managers taking over. Parkinson showed how they breed. Put the two together and you get Brussels. You get France, where the state spends more than half of everything the country produces and still cannot fix a hospital. This is not because the people inside are wicked. It is because the machine works exactly as Parkinson said it would. 7. The vindication. Parkinson was dismissed as a humorist. Then Milei cut Argentina’s ministries in half – and the country did not collapse. It barely noticed, except on the bill. The lesson is simple: you cannot reform a bureaucracy by asking it what to cut. It will always propose to cut the ships – and hire someone to manage the cut.

I want to say something to young men: First, know that I love you, that I care about you, that I believe in you, and that I genuinely want the best for you. The way that society has turned you into scapegoats for all of it's problems and turned you into a punching bag for every other group is indefensible, and I think future historian will look back on this era and see the treatment of young men as deeply shameful. As I have been watching young men get abused by the culture, I noticed that a number of influencers on the right were looking to take advantage of the anger young men feel at being treated this way. These influences feed young men a steady diet of outrage, negativity, and black-pills as a way to get engagement for themselves on social media, and to gin up anger among young men so the influencers can harness it for social and political ends. This has had the effect of demoralizing a lot of young men and poisoning them with cynicism, bitterness, and resentment. This has had a terrible effect on young men, because anger stirred up by black pills doesn't turn into responsible political action, it turns into a really destructive form a cynical nihilism. When that happens you don't get a an effective army of political soldiers that engages in productive change, you get a swarm of directionless young men engaging in chaos and destruction. Jordan Peterson gave a lecture on the movie Pinocchio where he talked about a group of boys at a place called pleasure island, who spend all their time drinking, smoking, and destroying everything. As they do so, they fall under a curse that turns them into Jackasses. Peterson said that this was a metaphor of how when young men pursue immediate gratification at the expense of the development of their character, they become slaves to their desires and they lose the ability to develop their capacity to pursue what is higher and greater. They become like animals who just pursue their immediate desires and while surrendering to their most destructive instincts. This is what happens to young men who get poisoned by black pills and nihilism. When you tell young men that things are hopeless and constantly bombard them with negativity and hopelessness and encourage them to motivated by anger, rage, bitterness, and resentment, you are training them to indulge their baser instincts and rot their souls by pursuing the immediate gratification. Men like that don't engage in political action, they engage in the constant venting of their rage and doing whatever feels cathartic in the moment. This is happening a LOT on the right. A lot of men who first showed up when they were under 40, have gone from having something really important to say, and saying it well, to peddling conspiracies, outrage, anger, nihilism and cynicism all day, while reveling in their ability to say edgy things and offend people. Its the political influencer podcast equivalent of pleasure island; only they get their pleasure from tearing down everyone who they blame (sometimes even correctly) for holding them back, and attacking anyone on the right who isn't as black-pilled as they are. And what I want to tell young men is that regardless of how good it may feel, gratifying your anger by hurling invective at the groups you blame for the terrible circumstance young men really are under is not a solution - and it's going to rot your soul. Anger is not a plan, black pilling is not a solution, and cynical nihilism dressed up as "telling it like it is" will never put anything right. I know this because I have gone through everything you are going through now: turned down for jobs in favor of people less qualified then me, scapegoated for things I didn't do, excluded from opportunities I had earned, pas over for promotions in favor of people with lower metrics and less seniority because management wanted to fulfill "diversity requirements," I could go on. On top of all that, when I was 11 my mom left my father and kept me from him for nearly a decade, and my sons mom waged an 8 month battle to keep my son from me. Believe me, my life bears all the scars from the things our culture does to young men. So, please trust me when I say I've been there...in fact I am there. However, giving into the despair, wallowing in resentment and bitterness, and lashing out in anger are not solutions. Things almost never change on the basis of action fueled by anger and resentment. The sort of change you want happens when you do the sort of things that Jordan Peterson talks about: clean up your life, take as much responsibility as you can, becomes as competent as you can, aim up, and start fixing the things in your immediate vicinity while building your character. I know that isn't what a many people want to hear because the kind of change that produces is slow in the making and does nothing to scratch the itch for revenge that so many young men have. I know you all want change, and God knows I do as well, but we are not going to get it by saturating our souls with resentment an bitterness. There are going to be people who claim I am trying to merely convince you to back to being ineffective, or to accept your lot in life as is. No. I am not telling you to do that. What I am telling you is that letting yourself be swallowed bitterness, resentment, cynicism, and nihilism isn't going to help you. You're not any closer to fixing things when you let yourself be demoralized by more negativity coming through your phone. I know things are bad, but marinating in nihilism and letting ourselves be demoralized is not going to fix anything. Jordan Peterson once said that opportunity lurks wherever responsibility has been abdicated, and responsibility has been abdicated everywhere in our society, and in my view that means there has to be opportunities lurking. I fully believe that the young men who have been cast aside from society have the capacity to take this time we have in the social and cultural wilderness to build the next great thing, because it is there calling in life to do so. There is no denying that being tossed aside and scapegoated sucks, but it also means that there is an enormous well of taken from which to draw on to build the next great industry, artistic movement, philosophy, technological advancement, or religious revival. There are enormous numbers of young men who are being overlooked, who have the capacity to get together and build something great. So the attitude we ought to take is not "it's hopeless," the attitude we ought to take is "we are going to become so successful that you will no longer be able to stuff us down." Anon, you were born to late to explore the earth and born to early to explore the galaxy, but you were born just in time to save western civilization, and that's not a bad deal all things considered. "God has made us what we are. He has created us in Christ Jesus to live lives filled with good works that he has prepared for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10). /fin

I get what he’s going for but this wasn’t articulated well. The problem is all the strains of socialism and their cultural side is complex and you need a whole dissertation to break any one aspect down. @NewDiscourses is good for that.
Asked how he defines socialism, @VP Vance says: "I don't know what the term means anymore. I think in reality, what it actually means in the American context is that you want to replace American workers with foreign workers, and you want boys to play in girls' sports."

The H1B policy change and lockdown with Microsoft will have a massive impact. Housing is unaffordable here and H1B has fundamentally changed the town I've lived in since 1991. We've have a 10 year lego block apartment building boom to accommodate the massive influx of H1B workers. Anyone who grew up here can't afford to buy a home. Our property taxes have increased 30% since Covid. I always hear the argument "there are no American workers to fill the roles." But I know so many friends and colleagues who were forced out and replaced by H1Bs at Microsoft, and many other local tech companies. In fact, most had to train their H1B replacement, and if they didn't, they'd lose their severance package. This is my anecdotal experience and your results may vary. I have also worked with plenty of H1Bs in roles that could easily be filled by a highly capable American. But somehow the visa fee and salary was cheaper than keeping an American on board. And I never saw any benefits in outcomes. It was just cheaper. Is there a valid use of this type of program? Yes, I believe so. But most major tech companies have abused the program and native-born American workers were sacrificed. This is wrong. The H1B program needs to be recalibrated.

They love this argument: If you can’t distinguish between various factions of far-leftism, then you’re automatically disqualified from having an opinion. Up front, here are the definitions (plus bonus Leninism definition): Communists = Strive for a classless society with common ownership of production. Marxists = Communists who believe in a classless society as the end of history. Leninists = Those who idolize the man who operationalized Marxism to its logical conclusion. Socialists = Fake meaning (Berniebros): Kids who like free stuff. Real meaning (PSL, DSA): Communists who pretend to tolerate dissent. And now here’s the reason why they’re all interchangeable and why it’s perfectly OK for everyone to use any one of those terms to refer to the others: They all advocate to overthrow the American government via revolution. Every single faction I’ve researched has had links to foreign hostile governments in service of revolution. Rubio’s Cuba Report from last week did a good job of documenting far left ties to Cuba. But what’s not covered is their deep ties to Venezuela, Nicaragua, Iran, China, and more. Far-leftists are fundamentally subversive to the core, with allegiances to foreign hostile governments. All of them. That’s what makes them interchangeable. Not whether they decide their party platform via Comintern vs. parliament. They’re “populist” only insofar as their allegiance is to some arbitrary Communist utopia rather than NATO. Which, by the way, is why I’m going to call out any right-wing commentator who proposes forming alliances with so-called “left-wing populists.” State governments must take the lead in banning far-leftists from voting in local elections or holding statewide office.

Spend at least a little bit of time each day being grateful for what you have and take for granted, rather than what you don't have Here's a thought experiment: imagine that all indoor plumbing suddenly disappeared. No running water, no toilets Imagine how dramatically that would change your quality of life. Think of all the additional work you would need to do in order to compensate for that loss And this is just one small thing. Keep in mind that we live in the greatest period of time to be alive
The good 'ol days—they were dreck. "Because most children died in infancy, a woman needed to give birth many times, and sooner or later one of those births would almost certainly kill her. If somehow you survived infancy, childhood diseases would probably kill you, and if they didn’t, the education you got would be either no school or a nightmare school. If you made it to adulthood, the lack of transport would limit your marriage prospects to the people in your village, to whom you were probably related, and with whom you were therefore condemned to produce genetically questionable offspring (as you probably were yourself). You lived in a one-room shack filled with filth, or in a tenement in a town whose streets were filled with filth, and so the air stank and the water was unsafe to drink, which is why you were sick most of the time. You had just a few stinking lice-infested rags for clothes, and lice in your hair too, so you itched all the time. The food was of low quality and limited variety, and generally available in inadequate quantities. But even if on rare occasions you got something good to eat, you would not enjoy it much because, by the time you reached adulthood, most of your teeth were gone. You worked from dawn to dusk, but, exhausted as you were, you might not get much sleep because you shared your home with livestock, and even if they were well behaved and made little noise, you needed to be alert at night because there were no police, and you were living in a criminal-infested combat zone. After the development of printing, there were books, but even if you could read and afford them, you would not have much time to read because you worked all day and it was dark at night." quillette.com/2026/10/04/lif…

😖😫😤 So sick of posts presuming what’s happened to Education was ‘error’, or ‘misguided’ etc. If you don’t know every single bit of it was intentional, thoroughly planned, heavily funded and purposed to destroy the Western nations (and national sovereignty itself) and to deliberately destroy the rational mind and the functioning conscience and courage of the individual, the integrity of the family ….etc. If you think this is all some mishap - shake yourself and learn through the freely available (for now) public domain material demonstrating its strategic and tactical intent - from the getgo, now well over a century (and more!) in its tyrannical operation. The ‘theories’, the pedagogies, the methodologies…..were intentional, to do exactly what they have done and to bring about exactly what has happened. Full deracination and the crippling of agency. Stop talking about Education - through the marketing bullshit propaganda speak it was sold to you as. Recognize what was always only ever poison - deliberately deployed.

A functional government needs to operate more or less entirely between those two black dots. They should define the boundaries of reasonable tax policy in a functional society.
