I agree 100%. I’ve taught fourth grade for 20 years, and I assure you that we DO teach these skills! Retention has worsened over the last decade. Last year, a teacher friend moved up with her 3rd graders into 4th and was stunned by what they’d forgotten…skills she taught, tested, and saw them master. It’s alarming. Every school year it’s like starting from scratch.
I've had 11th graders that don't know what a paragraph is.
I don't mean that they can't write a paragraph (they can't), but that they don't actually know what one is. I've asked students to look for the third paragraph on a page, or some such direction, only to get asked "what is that?"
I am not exaggerating. I am not being sensational. I have a lot of ideas for how things got so bad, but it is undeniably bad. The average person has no idea.
