My heart goes out to everyone who lost bitcoin in the Coldcard hack. That is a real gut punch, and no one should have to go through it. Seeing a lot of people freaking out and questioning the whole idea of self-custody because of it. One company made a serious mistake on the one job a hardware wallet has: generating solid entropy for the seed. That hurts so many real people. At the same time, it does not mean self-custody is broken, even though it might feel like it today. Self-custody is and will always be the point. You hold the keys. No third party that can freeze, lose, or seize your bitcoin. That is what makes this different from the old system. Also, for many people, a simple single-sig setup does the job well. One seed, written down properly and stored safely. Clear and manageable. Countless people also lose bitcoin through their own mistakes rather than sophisticated attacks. Lost seeds, forgotten passphrases, botched setups. Adding layers of complexity also gives more places to mess up. If your stack grows or your threat model changes, it off course makes sense to step up. Multi-sig, a strong passphrase, extra entropy measures. Match the complexity to the amount and the risk. That is a smart upgrade path, not a rejection of the simpler tools that work better for a large number of people. Be careful not to overcorrect. Do not throw away practical self-custody for setups that are hard to maintain, or even worse, hand the keys to someone else who has already proven they can lose them too. Hold your own keys. Keep the setup as simple as your risk allows. Verify everything.

Supporting education is an important part of our mission because students are the innovators and leaders of tomorrow. This year, we hosted educational sessions at universities across Europe, introducing students to hardware wallets, crypto security, and the importance of taking control of their digital assets. By helping the next generation understand how to use and protect crypto safely, we’re building a more informed and secure future for the entire ecosystem.

Naomi Whitehead has lived through 116 years of monetary history. She was 3 when the Fed was created and 115 when the Czech National Bank became the first central bank in the world to buy Bitcoin. Here’s what happened in between: 1913 (age 3): creation of central banking. The Federal Reserve Act created the Fed and authorized Federal Reserve Notes, initially subject to a 40% gold-reserve requirement. The stated goal was an “elastic” currency and a lender of last resort. It was the institutional start of managed money. 1933 (age 22): Executive Order 6102. During the Depression banking crisis, Roosevelt required most private gold coin, bullion, and gold certificates to be surrendered at the existing official rate. Domestic gold convertibility was ended. Americans could no longer redeem dollars for gold. 1934 (age 23): end of the domestic gold standard. The Gold Reserve Act moved monetary gold to the Treasury and reset the official price to $35 an ounce, a devaluation of roughly 41%. Private monetary gold ownership stayed broadly restricted for the next four decades. The classical monetary restraint was broken for Americans. 1944 (age 33): Bretton Woods. The dollar became the center of the postwar system: foreign currencies were pegged to the dollar, and the dollar was convertible to gold at $35 only for official foreign holders. A gold-exchange standard, not the old full gold standard. It allowed the U.S. to issue dollar liabilities far beyond its gold holdings. 1971 (age 60): the dollar becomes fiat. The Nixon Shock closed the gold window. Foreign official holders could no longer redeem dollars for gold. By 1973 major currencies were floating. The dollar was no longer redeemable for a fixed quantity of gold. 2008 (age 98): the financial crisis. Housing leverage, bank balance sheets, and easy credit collapsed. The Fed cut rates to zero, began quantitative easing, and massively expanded its balance sheet to stabilize the system. Fiat expansion became the main crisis tool. October 2008 / January 2009: creation of Bitcoin. Satoshi Nakamoto’s white paper described a peer-to-peer electronic cash system with a hard cap of 21 million coins and no central issuer. The genesis block was mined in January 2009, with a message about bank bailouts embedded in it. A direct counter-offer to a system that had just required emergency intervention. 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024: the Bitcoin halvings. The new-supply rate was cut in half on a fixed schedule, from 50 BTC per block to 3.125 today. No committee or emergency exceptions. The monetary policy works whether Bitcoin was $10 or $60,000. March 2020 (age 109): COVID money printing. Rates went back to zero and the Fed launched massive QE. Its balance sheet surged from around $4.2 trillion at the start of 2020 to nearly $9 trillion by early 2022. Bitcoin’s issuance schedule did not change. 7 September 2021 (age 110): El Salvador makes Bitcoin legal tender. The first country to put it alongside a national currency, require businesses to accept it as payment, and hold it on the state balance sheet. A nation opted into the 21 million cap. January 2024 (age 113): U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs. The SEC approved exchange-traded products holding spot Bitcoin. Wall Street distribution met a fixed supply. BlackRock, Fidelity, and others became pipes into the same asset. October 2025 (age 115): Bitcoin hits a new all-time high above $126,000. Against a dollar whose gold link had been gone for 54 years. November 2025 (age 115): Czech National Bank buys Bitcoin. The Czech National Bank became the first central bank in the world to buy Bitcoin.

Self-custody your crypto. Exchanges are not your friend.

Very wrong. Coinbase tells customers that the customers were hacked while knowing it’s false. Took us a few months, but external forensic firms, secret service were involved. We ultimately traced the hack to a specific Coinbase codebase, the same attacker, (likely Lazarus group, but we’re not 100% sure) repeatedly compromised Coinbase over many months, targeting many different user accounts. Coinbase is expert at working the legal and political system to avoid accountability. Their default contracts with all customers forces arbitration. Their donations to various congressmen and Trump last election cycle means most DAs and DoJ won’t touch them. Does that mean accountability is hopeless because of corruption even over black and white ongoing fraud? No, as long as there are people like me willing to face hundreds of thousands or millions in legal fees over malicious harassment, and who have the patience to find or wait for the prosecution. It’s this simple: if Coinbase agrees not to harass or sue for me for it, I will release the full dossier with full detailed proof.

The Dutch government is punishing ownership. Physical gold, silver and crypto were meant to sit outside the system as a check on it. Now they want annual tax on paper profits you haven’t sold. So the rational move for many people now is to own the ETF instead of the asset. They’re not reforming Box 3. They’re trying to kill ownership.
BREAKING New Dutch Tax Scare (BOX 3) (for alternative investments) Physical gold and silver and self-stored crypto will be taxed yearly (36%) on UNREALISED profits While Crypto and gold/silver related ETF’s (and Investment Funds, like ours) wil have a capital gains tax of 36% for realised profits only There You Go: They want money/wealth to stay into system Ht @bslagter

Coinbase “lost” $25m of my firm’s a couple years ago. Turned out they were actually covering up massive and repeated hacks. Still wouldn’t return our money. We traced this to at least a dozen other affected firms and over $1b covered up. That’s all I can say for now as multiple legal processes still ongoing.

Last weekend was all about hardware wallets and self-custody at BTCHEL. I gave a keynote on Hardware Wallets 101 in Finnish, covering the basics, then joined a panel on “What’s actually stopping you from holding your own keys?” that went much deeper into self-custody. Thanks to everyone who came by, asked questions, challenged the ideas, and stuck around for the discussions. And thanks to the BTCHEL crew for putting it all together. Had an absolute blast.

Bitget just got hacked for over $170 million. Expected many more of these hacks going forward…. Especially with hot wallets. I use a @Trezor for cold storage. Not sponsored. I just want people to be safe.
[SECURITY NOTICE] Bitget Hot Wallet Incident — September 24, 2026 At 18:31 UTC on September 24, 2026, Bitget's security systems detected unauthorized transfers from some of our hot wallets. Our security team activated emergency response protocols immediately. What we have confirmed: -Estimated funds affected: approximately $351.6 million -Cold wallets remain fully secure. Bitget operates a three-tier wallet architecture — the breach contained only a portion of the hot wallet and warm wallet layers. -User funds are safe. The full amount of this loss falls within the coverage of Bitget's User Protection Fund, which currently holds over $464 million Actions we have taken: -Emergency response team activated within minutes of detection -Abnormal transfer addresses identified, flagged, and reported -Withdrawals temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure, pending security review -Law enforcement and on-chain security firms have been formally notified and are engaged What this means for you: -Your account balances are accurate and your assets are protected -Deposits and trading remain fully operational Withdrawals are temporarily paused and will be restored as soon as the security review is complete -What comes next: We will provide updates on an hourly basis across this channel and all official platforms. A full incident report — including root cause analysis and corrective actions — will be published within 24 hours. We will not speculate on the attack vector until the investigation is complete. Bitget has navigated multiple market cycles. We will not run from this. Every dollar and every decision will be accounted for, transparently and in full. Updates will be posted here and across all official Bitget channels as they become available. — Gracy Chen, CEO, Bitget

Seed phrases. Hardware wallets. The extra steps nobody wants and why exchanges feel so easy. Then another exchange lights up the timeline, and you remember why you do it. Not your keys, not your coins. Especially tonight.
