Words cannot capture the joy of coaching this team. Only the realization that it's a gift from God to be part of this group. I'm blessed and full of gratitude! #lvhsxc #crosscountry @LagoVistaISD

Much of our society seems to reward the loud and outspoken. Be loud, dogmatic, and controversial and you get an audience. Taking 'extreme' stances gets clicks, likes, and news appearances. Somehow we have to incentivize & reward the nuanced, rational, and common sense take...

This is the way. By far and away, leadership with intention.
As an Athletic Director, I believe three of the most important traits of effective leadership are: 1. Be where your feet are planted and be present in the moment. Leadership requires being fully present. Whether you are celebrating a championship, supporting a coach through a difficult moment, or simply walking through the halls, people need to know you are engaged, accessible, and invested in what is happening right now. 2. Empower others to lead and make decisions. Great leaders do not feel the need to have every answer or make every decision. My responsibility is to surround myself with great people, give them ownership, trust their expertise, and create an environment where they feel empowered to lead. When you empower others, you build a stronger organization and develop leaders throughout your program. 3. Be a servant to those you lead. Leadership is not about being the person at the top. It is about serving the people you are responsible for leading. My job is to remove obstacles, provide support, create opportunities, and help coaches, athletes, and staff become the best versions of themselves. When you serve your people well, they know you genuinely care about them and their success. Ultimately, leadership is about presence, trust, and service. Be present. Empower people. Serve others. When you do those three things consistently, you create a culture where people feel valued, trusted, and motivated to lead.

COACH: How you do ANYTHING is how you do EVERYTHING - Set up the cones with intention - Answer the emails with care - Write the notes to check in on your athletes - Obsess over the details of today's practice A great coach does the little things and big things with the same level of excellence

You're willing to run hard on hard days. You're willing to be uncomfortable on race day. But are you willing to go easy on your easy days? Keep your easy days easy so your hard days - including races - can be hard. Let's go!

Athletes: As much as you want to know what every workout will look like this week, understand that the best coaches coach by feel. They make adjustments based on how you look warming up or how you ran the previous workout. Trust their judgment. Let's go!

We did what I call a "Team Run" this weekend. My fastest runners sacrificed their individual race to help our 3–5 runners learn how to race. Packs. Controlled first mile. Rotate the lead. Stay together as long as possible. At 2 miles? Jailbreak. Go race. Both our varsity girls and freshman boys won their divisions. But that wasn't the point. Everyone says XC teams are only as good as their #5. What gets missed is that the #5 runner is fighting a completely different race than the #1. Sometimes the best thing your fastest runners can do in August is teach the rest of the team how to race in October.

Sitting on the bus returning from a great XC meet. There’s not a phone out and everyone is singing. This is the way. Our team has been built from the heart out. @LagoVistaISD #lvxc #crosscountry

Building an aerobic system takes time, calculation, patience and perseverance. It is a constant calibration process, often delicate because of a wide range of variables. Despite the intricacies, its reward appears as VO2 improvement but the real reward is… character.

We are better with @VDOTO2! We’ve been using their platform all summer and it has organized our teams training in one space. Powerful, intuitive and user friendly! We’ve had our best offseason ever! Built in pacing and pushes workouts. #lvxc #crosscountry @LagoVistaISD

People stories like this are incredibly moving. When an opportunity presents itself to change someone’s life, carefully consider the moment God has positioned you with. Kudos to this young man for making a young girl smile 🙌🙏
A 10-year-old girl with leukemia had one final wish: to “marry” her childhood best friend. Her family, teachers and medical staff organized a symbolic backyard ceremony in less than 48 hours, with nearly 100 guests attending. She passed away peacefully 12 days later. 🥹❤️‍🩹

Brilliant analysis! Always searching for the variables.
Your athlete has a terrible race. Before you change the training, ask one question: What changed? Fitness? Fatigue? Fueling? Sleep? Stress? One of my best runners raced poorly yesterday. A week earlier she'd run the best race of her life. The training hadn't stopped working. She just hadn't eaten. A bad performance tells you something happened. It doesn't tell you what. Diagnose first.
