The catastrophic mountain flooding in Nepal that killed more than 1,300 people was driven by a complex web of climate and seismic processes that made it nearly impossible to predict, according to an international team of scientists bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Warming Played ‘Very Strong’ Role in Himalayan Floods, Study Finds nytimes.com/2026/09/16/clima… via @NYTimes
The catastrophic August flooding on the Nepal-China border was influenced by a complex cascade of factors, many of which were worsened by human-driven climate change, according to a new scientific analysis by more than 20 international experts. cnn.it/4xpRhtB
Over 17,000 children affected by the recent devastating floods in Nepal require urgent mental health and psychosocial support to recover from the distress and trauma caused by the disaster.
UNICEF is working with government authorities and partners to protect children affected by the floods through family tracing, reunification and psychosocial support services.

Despite everything, Nepal and vulnerable communities are going through with climate mange and triple planetary crisis, runaway AI is scaring UN more! Wow!
The world faces three existential threats:
Runaway artificial intelligence.
The climate crisis.
And the intolerable deepening of inequalities.
Next week, world leaders are coming together at #UNGA.
My message to them:
International cooperation is more important than ever.

Humanity is speeding towards a climate catastrophe.
That’s the stark warning from the latest @UNEP report.
Every fraction of a degree of warming will cost lives, deepen inequalities & push ecosystems closer to irreversible damage.
We must raise ambition, accelerate #ClimateAction & fight for humanity. NOW.

Indeed we are! Climate impacts, suffering and climate injustice , look the same!
Nepalis in the Khumbu and Bangladeshis in Barisal watch the same waters rise. Between them: borders, languages, passports, politics. Above them: the same sky rivers. Below them: the same meltwater, seeking the same ocean.

This is not standard flooding; it is a Himalayan Tsunami: Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal
As specialised multinational rescue teams battle shifting topographies to reach buried hydropower tunnels, the country's foreign minister tells @KantipurTVHD why Nepal is demanding legal climate compensation for a natural disaster it did not create.

Nepal has made a formal request to the Fund for responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD) to respond to the catastrophic flood that has caused unimaginable loss of lives and widespread damage. #nepalflood
As someone involved in the Transitional Committee that helped establish the Fund, I clearly remember our discussions about making it different from conventional climate funds, more responsive to the realities and urgency of loss and damage.
The FRLD now has an opportunity to demonstrate what it was created to deliver: timely, accessible and grant-based support when vulnerable countries face catastrophic loss and damage.
We sincerely hope no country has to face such a tragedy. But today, Nepal needs solidarity translated into action.
I have fresh memories of visiting the affected area just two days before the disaster, which makes this tragedy deeply personal. Each passing hour brings reports of further loss, while families continue searching for their loved ones. It is deeply difficult to process.
The precise causes of this extraordinary event are still being investigated, but it comes against the wider reality of a rapidly warming climate, thawing permafrost, retreating glaciers and growing risks of extreme events across Nepal and the Himalaya. Those who have contributed least to climate change are increasingly bearing devastating #LossandDamage.

*** Nepal-Tibet Disaster Update***
Our preliminary analysis of #Sentinel-1 satellite #radar observations from January 8 to August 19, 2026, reveals measurable #downslope motion, reaching ~10 mm/month, within the #glacier/ice-rock system near the apparent source of the #August 26 #Nepal–#Tibet disaster.
Remarkably, the satellite observations extend to just seven days before the catastrophic collapse and flood.
The results suggest that the #slope was #deforming #prior to #failure and raise an important question: could satellite radar observations help #identify #developing #instability in #high-#mountain glacier and rock systems before #catastrophic #collapse?

Devastating floods have struck communities in Nepal and China.
My thoughts are with all those affected, especially the families who have lost loved ones or are still waiting for news.
We also share a thought for the brave first responders.
Copernicus has been activated to help map the affected areas in Nepal and support the response on the ground.
We stand ready to mobilise further European assistance.
Water diplomacy for Early Warning and Early Action! Tibet glaciers cannot be data blind spots! We need to respond now, but please keep in mind that this will not be the last! The worst is yet to come,so climate information and resilient infrastructure should follow! #rasuwaFloods
