The real Bill the Butcher died with a line so dramatic that it was painted on his hearse. Daniel Day-Lewis made him a movie legend in Gangs of New York. The real man, William Poole, was in some ways, even wilder than the film. He was a Manhattan butcher by trade, which is where the nickname came from, and one of the most feared street fighters in America. He led the Bowery Boys, the nativist gang that served as muscle for the anti-immigrant/anti-corruption Know-Nothing movement. They battled the Irish gangs tied to the Tammany Hall machine, which was mass naturalizing immigrants weeks before elections to rig the vote. In February 1855, Poole was ambushed at a Broadway saloon and shot through the heart. Against doctor expectations, he clung to life for eleven days. His last words: "Goodbye boys, I die a true American." New York gave him one of the largest funerals in its history. Thousands of mourners. 155 carriages. A flag-draped coffin. And that final line emblazoned across the side of his hearse. His killer was tried three times and walked free every time on hung juries.

My phone hasn’t stopped buzzing all day with messages congratulating me on becoming a Junior Sergeant. I’ve been reading every single one, and honestly, it still doesn’t feel real yet. After 16 months of service, the only thing left now is signing a new contract with the Armed Forces of #Ukraine. It’s a strange moment to sit in, looking back at everything that’s happened, and forward to everything still ahead. Ukraine has given me more than I could ever put into words. The people, the resilience, the purpose, it changes you. And the soldiers I serve with… they are the strongest, most selfless people I’ve ever known. It’s an honour to stand beside them every single day. I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity to step into the role of Junior Sergeant. Not just as a #Canadian who chose to be here, but as someone who believes deeply in what we’re fighting for. And to everyone who supports me, through messages, donations, sharing our work, or just paying attention, thank you. Every bit of it matters more than you know. This isn’t just a title. It’s a responsibility. And I’m ready for it. #Support93

Ukrainian Defender and volunteer Maryna Pleshcheieva surprised her husband on the front lines in Donetsk region. Maryna arrived in full combat gear, and at first, her husband didn’t even recognize her. Wishing them a long and happy life together in peace. 📹: pleshcheieva.m / Instagram

I’m from Canada, but the men and women I serve with here are my family. Yesterday, I watched a video of one of my closest friends dying. There was nothing we could do to save him. That is the reality we are living in. But there is something we can still do for the ones who are alive. Every shotgun in our hands is a chance to stop a drone. Every shotgun is a chance for someone to make it home. A shotgun is not just a weapon here, it is survival. I can’t run fundraising campaigns the way others might. We are limited to a Ukrainian charity, and even speaking about this carries risks for us. So today I’m asking for something simple, but powerful. Please share this. Share it so more people understand what we are facing. Share it so we have a chance to get what we need. Share it because right now, that is how you can help keep us alive. I am asking you, from the front, as someone who has already lost too much, please help us survive this. next.privat24.ua/payments/fo… #Support93 #SupportUkraine

I used to think “War Barbie” or “War Influencer” were bad things to be called. Like some kind of insult but after being in Ukraine for this long, I see it differently. Whatever brings attention to the fundraisers, to my guys, to the army .. that’s what matters. If a label helps get gear, meds, cars, drones, and training equipment to the front, then fine, I’ll wear it. I am a volunteer for the Ukrainian Army and a proud Frontline Medics social media manager. That’s who I am. I know who I am and what I do. My friends know who I am and everyone I help here knows it too. That’s all that counts. So keep calling me however you want. It doesn’t change my work in Ukraine. It doesn’t change who I am. I’ll keep doing what I do, without shame, without hesitation so I’ll be still me and I will be still fighting for them.

These men keep me alive when my breath is taken away and I feel broken to the bone. I want more than anything for as many of us as possible to survive this hell. Every share, comments and donation makes this a possibility paypal.com/donate/?hosted_bu… The list is long from generators, Starlinks, neck protection, war belts to vehicles. Our soldiers come with nothing but they risk their lives without the same equipment as their brothers. With your help this is changing. Please don’t be indifferent, help our defenders protect Donetsk Oblast. #Support93 #SupportUkraine

Things are busy, I don’t have time to stop but in this moment I wanted to update everyone. We are $761 away from our 🎯 of $5930 for the third thermal drone. 🙏 Please keep sharing. Anything above and beyond will go towards tactical tablets so those using the drones can communicate enemy and friendly positions with our infantry in real time. These pieces of technology, they are everything out here. Thank you 🫂 #Support93 #SupportUkraine
Today we have the funds for two thermal drones and $1630/$5930 for the next. I asked the battalion commander. Do we keep going or do we use the funds for other needed items. His answer said everything. “Every drone is needed now. If it’s possible the world will stand with us to hold the line, ask them.” So here I am, still asking you, to not underestimate the power of your shares. To share our fundraiser far and wide and help our men keep the enemy from moving any further in Donetsk Oblast. paypal.com/donate/?hosted_bu… Another donor, supporter and friend asked me to pin the post of my men coming back from position after months of not being able to rotate out. I understand it’s not always clear how bad things are here. As a soldier I say what I can but not before it’s published. I cannot have open opinions or share Opsec evacs for fear of what will happen to my men. But we are here, in Donetsk Oblast, fighting in the hardest fights, we are infantry, without the protection of armoured vehicles and distance from the enemy. Drones they are our lifeline. Please don’t be indifferent. Support my men, put eyes in the sky. #Support93 #SupportUkraine

If Ukraine has no choice but to accept “de facto” occupation — that’s because WE failed. Not because Ukrainians failed, not because some mysterious “shit happened”, but because for years we ignored all the warnings, repeated all the mistakes of history, kicked the can down the road and refused to do what it takes to defend the rules and principles that enable sustainable peace and prosperity. This is on us. We are the architects of this de facto defeat, so now we are trying to pretend it came out of nowhere and we did the best we could to stop it. In a spectacular display of unbombed westsplaining, Mark Rutte is suggesting that everything will be OK in the long run, like it was OK in the Baltic States after decades of de facto occupation by jolly old Uncle Joe Stalin. Well, I have shrugged off a lot of dumb hot takes about my country over the last few years, but this one is literally sickening. Rutte is revealing that the latest genius 5D chess move to save Ukraine is to casually throw millions of people into a black hole of oppression, torture, rape, kidnapping, murder and destruction of national identity — “de facto, but not de jure”. And the proponents of this plan will keep a straight face while they cite the misery of the occupation of the Baltic States as a shining example that Ukraine should happily walk into. In his FT column, Gideon Rachman says little to fill the gap in Rutte’s world view: "The Soviet Union’s annexation of the Baltic states after 1940 was never legally recognised by the US and most European countries. But it was a fact of life, until, eventually, the Baltic states regained their independence." Yikes, let’s unpack that. The occupation wasn’t “a fact of life”, it was a fact of death. “Eventually” was after decades of deportations, killing, grinding terror and violent attempts to turn everybody into russians. “Regained their independence” was being crushed under Gorbachev’s tanks while western leaders pleaded with us to give up our fight for freedom. So… this is the path to peace we are supposed to offer to Ukraine with a smile? These are the glorious new security guarantees that will erase the shame of the Budapest Agreement and allow Ukrainians to have faith in the future? There are even US Ambassadors talking about how countries can “earn” certain territories and therefore presumably “deserve” them. Would it be paranoid of me to wonder if we just opened the door for Russia to “earn” Narva and Vilnius “de facto”? The full article is continued at the link below.
