Where diplomacy meets reality. Human rights are universal only when they apply equally to everyone. At @UNWatch, we bring those who have lived the consequences into the room. This is what that looks like at @UNGeneva.
UN Watch Chief Diplomacy Officer @DanielRadomski presents the organization's most memorable moments from the latest United Nations Human Rights Council session in Geneva. By bringing these powerful voices into the room, UN Watch made it harder for the world to look away. 🧵⬇️

Standing together across communities and causes, the new generation of Afghan, Iranian, Kurdish and Jewish human rights leaders offered @UNGeneva a practical lesson in universality at a side event by @UNWatch. As we mark fifteen years since the @UN Declaration on Human Rights Education, some principles are much easier to proclaim than to apply.
At the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, UN Watch hosted an official event showcasing outstanding young human rights leaders from Afghan, Iranian, Jewish, and Kurdish backgrounds. 🧵 Hear their powerful testimonies and stories of courage:

In an interview with the Danish newspaper Berlingske, Denmark’s former foreign minister Per Stig Møller recounts a highly compromising story about the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Navi Pillay. In 2008, when Denmark faced problems in Pakistan (a car bomb exploded outside the embassy) because of the Muhammad cartoons, Denmark turned to the UN - including the then High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay. On that occasion Pillay was completely dismissive of supporting Denmark. Her only recommendation to the foreign minister was to introduce censorship. That, she said, would prevent the problem in the future. I find it shocking that an opponent of freedom of speech can be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Replying to @NobelPrize
We are shocked that the Nobel committee honored Navi Pillay. Her troubling record on antisemitism and gross breach of ethics in presiding over a notorious UN commission utterly disqualifies her from such an award. The Nobel Peace Prize should uphold universal human rights and reject antisemitism unequivocally. Honoring Pillay without confronting this record undermines those principles and risks rewarding prejudice rather than advancing peace. In July 2021, Ms. Pillay accepted to chair a Pakistani-sponsored UN Commission of Inquiry into alleged Israeli crimes. The rules of due process require that fact-finders in the human rights field be impartial. Yet prior to accepting this post, Pillay had publicly pronounced herself, in extreme terms, on the very issues that her inquiry is mandated to investigate. In June 2020, she signed a manifesto calling on governments to “Sanction Apartheid Israel.” In June 2021, a month before heading the inquiry, Pillay wrote a letter to President Biden calling to punish Israel for the May 2021 war with Hamas. She has made many more prior prejudicial pronouncements. (See: unwatch.org/wp-content/uploa…) This not all. In July 2022, Pillay’s fellow commissioner Miloon Kothari railed against “the Jewish Lobby” and questioned Israel’s right to be a member state of the UN. Mr. Kothari was condemned by the world’s leading democracies, and by top UN officials including Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Astonishingly, however, Navi Pillay defended him. For those reasons, the Mayor of Berlin in 2022 withdrew her support for a town hall event set to honor Navi Pillay, and the award was canceled. By honoring Pillay, the Nobel committee has failed to uphold the principles it seeks to celebrate. International justice depends on impartiality. When an investigator campaigns to punish a country before examining the evidence, she compromises the credibility of both her findings and the institution she represents. Pillay’s defense of a colleague who invoked “the Jewish lobby” is especially disturbing. A human rights leader should recognize and unequivocally reject antisemitic stereotypes. Her response instead helped shield her colleague from accountability. The Nobel committee should have confronted that record before presenting her as a model of integrity. The victims of discrimination deserve institutions that apply the same standards to everyone. Today’s decision sends the wrong message: that achievements elsewhere excuse prejudice against Jews and the abandonment of basic standards of fairness when investigating Israel. That weakens the cause of universal human rights.

We are shocked the Nobel went to Navi Pillay. She called to sanction Israel before leading a UN inquiry into it—then backed a colleague’s “Jewish lobby” remark. The prize should uphold impartiality and reject antisemitism—not reward those who subvert both.

With 1800 fatalities that day, Palestinians sustained more losses on October 7 than in even the worst days of Israel's counteroffensive. It was deadliest day for Palestinians in the entire history of the conflict and, if the pictures are to believed, they were never happier.

October 7 exposed more than the savagery of Hamas. It exposed how Jewish grief and suffering are relativised, even by institutions that profess universal values of human rights. That same relativisation now reaches Jewish belonging across our societies, with acceptance being made conditional on surrendering parts of our own Jewish identity. Any society that seeks to decide and define which minorities are acceptable has abandoned any pretence of equality.

Ha sido un largo camino para llegar a una votación como esta. 25 Estados Miembros de los 47 están claros de que el mecanismo de investigación debe continuar y sólo 5 siguen defendiendo lo indefendible. Gracias a esos 25. Por las víctimas y por #Venezuela. #HRC63

A knife-edge election in a deeply divided Sweden. One genuinely encouraging result is that the Liberals remain in Parliament. One deeply troubling result is the surge of a far-left party deeply tainted by terror romanisation with PFLP and convicted terrorists, Hamas glorification and Jew-hatred. Sweden preserved liberalism and rewarded antisemitism.

Ten years after his passing, the World Jewish Congress, together with @axelspringer_EN, honored the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of Lord George Weidenfeld. Born in Vienna in 1919, Weidenfeld fled Austria for Britain following the Nazi annexation in 1938. From those beginnings as a young Jewish refugee, he became one of the most influential publishers, intellectual conveners and political advisers of postwar Europe, building relationships that connected the emerging State of Israel with leaders and institutions across the continent and beyond. During the Second World War, Weidenfeld worked for the BBC Overseas Service, before co-founding the publishing house Weidenfeld & Nicolson in 1948. Just a year later, he stepped away from the young firm to serve as political adviser and chief of cabinet to Chaim Weizmann, Israel’s first president. There, he worked among Israel’s founding generation and developed relationships with figures including David Ben-Gurion, Moshe Dayan and Shimon Peres that ensured for decades. Weidenfeld carried those relationships into a lifetime of advocacy for Israel and support of international dialogue. His publishing house brought the writings of leading Israeli figures to audiences around the world, while his broader work made him an important bridge between Israel and political and intellectual circles abroad. In 1996, he helped establish the Club of Three, bringing together leaders and opinion-shapers from Britain, France and Germany for candid dialogue on Europe’s future. That initiative would later contribute to the establishment of the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. Weidenfeld’s relationship with the World Jewish Congress reflected that commitment. An honorary vice president of the WJC, he was presented with the organization’s Theodor Herzl Award by WJC President Ronald S. Lauder at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum in 2015, recognizing his lifelong efforts on behalf of Israel and the Jewish people. A decade after his passing, his legacy endures in the institutions he built, the relationships he forged and his lifelong commitment to strengthening Israel’s place in the world.

This is truly a dark day for British Jews. Today our Government has chosen to ignore the deep concerns expressed by so many of us. The measures announced amount to little more than political flag bearing for mendacious anti-Israel rhetoric and those who harbour a dangerous obsession with the Jewish State. These measures will succeed only in bolstering the very extremism they seek to target. On the eve of Rosh Hashanah and at a time when our community is more vulnerable than ever to the wave of extremism that has been building over recent years, these sanctions do nothing to advance the cause of peace. Nor do they make anyone safer – quite the contrary. Gesture politics of this kind feeds into an increasingly hostile discourse about Israel, and the cumulative effect of such punitive policies is to further embolden those, at home and abroad, who use hatred as a weapon against Jews.
