In Part 1 of this week's Chalk Talk, I previewed the #Gophers defense vs. Iowa's offense. Which matchups, trends and schemes should you know about? Jump in here: gophersguru.com/2026/10/19/c…
UCLA LB Sammy Omosigho is going to be such a great NFL player. Explosive, physical, versatile, great blitzer, bursty from depth and rangy in coverage.
He pops every time I’m studying the Bruins. Fun to watch!!
Alex Golesh is innovative, open-minded and knows how to build a team that fits the modern football landscape. Even bigger things are ahead for Auburn.
I think the x-factor matchup in OSU-IU game will be the Hoosiers OL vs. the Buckeyes DL. Can OSU produce pressure without blitzing?
Also, watch passing downs situations. IU pressure plan needs to attack OSU’s interior OL and backs in pass pro. Can Sayin handle the sim pressure mix this time around? Curious to see IU’s schematic change ups.
Also, which running game will be more efficient and explosive in the second half? Gotta ice the game out at the LOS!

How did Purdue keep the #Gophers' offense off balance? In part two of the film room series, I analyzed the Boilers' coverage strategy and talked about Minnesota's running game: gophersguru.com/2026/10/14/h…
How did Purdue's counter run game variations stress the #Gophers defense? In this new film room, I wrote about the mix of various counter looks, including GT Counter Bash, Counter Crab 🦀, and more.

#Vikings vs. Saints postgame thoughts:
- I liked the early mix of quick game and how the route designs got Murray into a rhythm. Just put the ball in play! Good mix of under center and shotgun. The running game blend and play-action built off of the passing game designs quite well. Occasionally moved the pocket for Kyler too. You also saw Murray's second play ability show up today. Several scrambles and moments where he extended plays downfield. That's a big weapon when coverage gets locked up.
- Several effective drives were flowing until the penalties and turnovers hit. Need to clean up those details in future games.
- The two gap scheme runs on the last TD drive = 🔥🔥. Timed up perfect and well executed in a huge spot. Jones ran so hard! Looking forward to hopefully getting Jordan Mason back soon.
- The Vikings pressure mix did an excellent job of stressing the Saints' RBs in pass protection. I felt like that would be one of the keys today. The RB pass pro was spotty and NO was unable to rely on check down safety valves because the Vikes frequently kept them in for protection.
- Will Reichard is simply the best in the biz. Pure as can be!
Things to watch during #Vikings vs. Saints:
- The #Vikings perimeter rushing mix will be a big key. Hit the edges with outside zone, crack tosses, pin and pull, tosses, etc. Get Bredeson in the mix at FB. Vikes need to run the rock with efficiency and control the LOS. The Saints are last in rush defense success rate.
- Feels like a game that could be big for Hockenson up the seam and in the flats.
- Emphasize quick game hitches and speed cuts vs. Cover 3. Vikes could have success with in-breaking digs and over routes off of PA in this game. Change the launch point with Kyler.
- I'd use a heavy dose of simulated pressures, stunts & internal mugged double A-gap pressure vs. the Saints OL, especially in obvious passing downs situations. Make NO's backs have to stay in and protect.
A #Gophers notebook for the morning ☕️. Various gap schemes, including Counter and GT Counter Bash (counter and stretch path combined) gave Minnesota trouble. More:
The #Gophers struggled to stop the run in a 41-13 loss. I broke down Purdue’s success with counter runs and how the Boilers’ physical mix of man and zone coverage kept Minnesota off balance.

FINAL: #Gophers fall 41-13 at Purdue. The Boilermakers out-rushed Minnesota 299-25 and controlled the line of scrimmage with gap schemes. Fame Ijeboi had 31 carries for 195 yards and 3 TDs.
Purdue's DBs were aggressive in man coverage and challenged the Gophers' WRs. I'll have more analysis in a postgame notebook on GophersGuru.com.
Jalen Smith hit Hudauri Hines with a double move for a 42-yard touchdown on 2nd-and-long. On Purdue's next drive, Fame Ijeboi had a great 2nd-and-long run, finding the crease for 15 yards. PI on Aydan West.
Browne keeps and finds the end zone for a 12-yard TD. #Gophers trail 34-13.
#Gophers halftime thoughts:
- Purdue is having a ton of success with the counter plays. The #Gophers are struggling to get off of blocks, run fits have been leaky and Ijeboi is breaking tackles. Some precise execution in the run game from the Boilers.
- When coverage is plastered downfield, Browne is picking up big scrambles. He also did a great job of breaking contain to keep the play alive on the TD.
- Purdue bottled up the running game, holding Minnesota to 16 rushing yards on 7 attempts. The Gophers are trying to use screens as an extension of the running game. Kane is mixing the picture in third down situations. Toggling between single-high man and rolling two-high shells. Purdue's DBs have been very physical vs. the #Gophers WRs.
- Tom Weston has been great again.
Purdue is coming out with a variety of run concepts. Split zone flow, counter, insers, faking counter and running stretch. Browne breaks the pocket, slips out and finds George Burhenn for a 15-yard TD. Boilermakers lead 10-0. #Gophers
#Gophers defense holds Purdue to a FG. De'Nylon Morrissette got open for 30 yards vs. man coverage. Arrow screen to Waseem and great PBU by Kerry Brown.
Anthony Smith got pressure off the edge, Browne slipped out and then Baranowski triggered down, forcing an incompletion.
Here is the final availability report ahead of #Gophers vs. Purdue. No surprises entering the game.
