I’d had quite a quiet census up until this beast flew at me and landed on the dyke! What a cracking birthday present and a mental looking bird

We have special news!
3 white-tailed eagles have fledged from wild nests in Dorset & Sussex this summer.
With 5 pairs now established across England we hope to see further breeding in the coming years as this lost species is restored.

Birding Tarifa style! Fab few days so far with 100’s White Storks crossing, huge numbers of STE, Booted and now fewer Honeys and BKites. Supporting cast of 4 Bonellis, Gypo Vultures, Marsh Harriers. Plenty more to come until Sunday 👍 – at Tarifa, Spain
Went to Carsington yesterday afternoon to look for the Pec Sand from the night before. It was very distant but another wader joined it & then both spooked by a Hobby.
Jon & I stuck with them & after much scrutiny in various places it became clear there were two! @Derbyshirebirds
The rather obliging juv Red Backed
Shrike near Wingerworth, Chesterfield this evening. Watched it take many prey items including a Lesser Emperor which is possibly rarer! @derbyshirebirds

Tomorrow we've got a rather 'newsy' day, starting with filming a piece for @BBCLookNorth, followed by a short stint on @BBCYork Radio (approx. 8.45am) when we’ll be discussing our Corncrake reintroduction programme & how we're trying to bring this iconic species back to England.
Just noise. Corporate blah blah. Bloody annoying and I’m sick of it.
Two years of sweet Fanny Adams.
Get gone.
What on earth have I just listened to? 🤦♂️
BBC Breakfast actually took Yvette Cooper to task this morning over the government’s plan for nearly 200 walk-in mental health centres and dedicated mental health A&Es by 2029, in banks, libraries and hospitals… but with no extra staff.
Her response perfectly sums up this clueless Labour government.
BBC: “So you’d understand then that people might question how much progress could be made given there’ll be no extra recruitment even though there are going to be so many more facilities. That doesn’t seem to make sense?”
Cooper: “Getting people to work differently means you can work better.”
What?? What does that even mean? It’s a completely meaningless statement. No wonder people are cracking up listening to this lot every day.
She also said mental health funding is rising to an astonishing £16 billion this year, yet we seem to have more mental health problems than ever. So what on earth is going on?
Time for a rethink!

Camping trip in Dorset this week with my nephews, whilst setting up the tents they brought me this dead butterfly. Remains of a deceased Two-tailed Pasha!! Make of that what you will. (Norden campsite, next to corfe castle)

Finally visited the Long Tailed Shrike today. When given room it settled into a hunting routine and wasn’t bothered by its few admirers. It took a Vole and several Grasshoppers whilst we were there. Pics on iPhone through Swaro scope #Shrikes @BirdGuides @LeeEvansBirding

Located less than three miles from Marsden Bay, plastic pellets spill threatens one of England's most important seabird colonies.
One billion plastic pellets spilled into River Tyne after two ships collide
"Animals can easily mistake the nurdles for #food. They have been found in the stomachs and digestive tracts of a variety of species, from seabirds in the North Sea and #Australia to green turtles and fish off the coasts of #Brazil."

Something changed when Swiss farmers stopped fighting pests with more chemicals and started planting flowers instead.
Researchers found that wildflower strips sown through winter wheat fields cut cereal leaf beetle numbers by up to 53%.
Crop damage dropped by 61% because the flowers gave natural predators like parasitic wasps and hoverflies a place to live and hunt on. The idea is refreshingly simple.
Give nature's pest controllers a home and they take care of the rest.
The UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology has now planted similar strips across 15 farms in England to test whether the results hold outside Switzerland.
Early signs suggest these flower corridors help insects reach the center of large fields, not just the edges. It is a small change with a big promise for farmers hoping to grow food without leaning so hard on pesticides.

Iran has rearrested two conservationists trying to save one of the rarest animals on Earth.
The Asiatic cheetah now survives only in Iran, with fewer than 30 remaining.
The conservationists had already spent six years in prison after being accused of spying for using camera traps to monitor the species. They were released just two years ago.
Now they have been detained again, along with a family member.
The Wildlife Conservation Society called the arrests a cause for “profound concern.”
When the people protecting a species are treated like criminals, extinction gets one step closer.
