There seems to be some misunderstanding of what's new here. BigQuery has handled semi-structured data (Array, Struct) and JSON ingest/export for a long time.
What's new:
(1) JSON is supported as a column type
(2) ability to query the JSON structure:
SELECT cart['name'] ...
BigQuery now supports JSON natively:
