Good morning. My office is looking for a new Legislative Director. Below are some requirements and traits we are looking for in a new hire. 1. Must have read Bastiat's The Law and understand it well. 2. Must be a fan of our founding fathers and understand their historical positions and differences on various issues. 3. Must understand the philosophy of folks like Kant, Spengler, Smith, Locke, Socrates, Aristotle, Paul, Rand, Friedman, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, etc 4. Must be able to live in Austin from November to June. 5. Must have a good sense of humor and a good disposition. 6. Must be willing to work crazy hours for little recognition. 7. Must be able to pivot quickly and with accuracy on critical legislative details. 8. Must be trustworthy. 9. Must highly value ethics. 10. Must be able to read and write competently and comprehensively. 11. Must be able to keep office discussions and priorities private. If you are not a good person, please don't waste our time. If you feel you meet the above criteria, a legislative director needs to draft and amend bills, manage a calendar, work the floor, track other members’ bills, handle stakeholder meetings, and keep the member from walking into procedural traps. Previous experience in this area is helpful. If you don't have previous experience, you will need to be somebody who learns it quickly and puts in the extra effort to be better than the rest. This isn't a job to take lightly. Every decision we make carries the weight of someone's life, business, finances, and future. You do not want to be the person who made a choice that destroys someone else's livelihood when it was avoidable.
