Text reads: The new study used GPS tracking data from 157 African elephants collected over a 22 year period (1998-2020) in Northern Kenya. 94% of the elephants studied avoided steep slopes and rough terrain, suggesting elephants strongly prefer landscapes with lower movement costs. 93% indicated a preference for resource-rich environments, actively selecting areas with higher vegetation productivity. Avoiding energy costly areas: 74% when moving slowly, 87% when moving at intermediate speeds, 93% when moving fast.
