Shameful
California district attorneys are ripping Gov. Gavin Newsom after he commuted the sentences of all 548 death row inmates in the state, a sweeping act of clemency that prosecutors say was done without consulting or notifying victims' families. San Luis Obispo County DA Dan Dow says he was "sickened" by the decision, calling it a slap in the face to crime victims. LA County DA Nathan Hochman fires back that California voters have twice rejected abolishing the death penalty at the ballot box, and his office will keep pursuing capital cases "until the law is changed." Among those spared: men convicted of torturing and killing a 1-year-old girl and brutally slaying two female college students. Full story here foxnews.com/politics/califor…

Another repeat offender... held accountable for his second robbery committed after an earlier felony assault prison term. Parole and probation did not stop his crime wave. Thank you to the victim who testified and to the jury for their service.
GUILTY: SLO County jury convicts Scott Robert Davis of a second robbery, this time against a Target employee, committed while he was on probation for his first. Since 2022 he has swung a wine bottle at a shop owner and threatened a 7-Eleven clerk with knives. Sentencing is 1/14/27, and he faces up to 16 years. DA @DanDow said, "Our criminal and victim justice system has a duty to protect the people who keep our community's businesses open, and when someone shows us again and again that he will not stop, we must hold him fully accountable." slocounty.ca.gov/da

It should be noted that Gavin Newsom, while running for governor in 2018, specifically pledged to honor voters' decision to keep the death penalty. Almost immediately after inauguration he declared a moratorium on executions and now is granting clemency to death row inmates.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer Issues Statement on Governor Newsom’s Commutation of All Death Sentences in California Click here for full release: bit.ly/4AiweLB SANTA ANA, Calif. – Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer issued the following statement regarding California Governor Gavin Newsom’s commutation of all death sentences in California: Governor Gavin Newsom’s commutation of the death sentences of all 548 condemned inmates in California is mercy for the wolves and while inflicting the ultimate act of cruelty on the sheep. You cannot have crime without punishment, and in those instances in which the crimes committed are so heinous that death is the only appropriate punishment, I, as the elected District Attorney of Orange County, have, and will, continue to pursue the death penalty. The death penalty has been repeatedly upheld by California voters and we as prosecutors represent the People of California and the greater good. Clearly, Governor Newsom does not. The pursuit of justice does not bend to political whims, and I am heartbroken for the hundreds of families who must now grapple with the devastation of knowing that the monsters who harmed their loved ones are one step closer to being back out on our streets. The decision to impose death is not one made by an elected District Attorney an elected judge or an elected governor. It is the only sentence that is handed down by a jury of 12 who have listened to all of the evidence and decided that imposition of death is what is just. Governor Newsom’s decision to unilaterally eradicate the decisions of hundreds of juries comes as no surprise, as this is just another step in a calculated march to empty out California’s prisons and send a message that no one should be held responsible for their crimes. As of October 1, the state Board of Parole implemented regulations which allows thousands of inmates sentenced to Life Without the Possibility of Parole to be eligible for parole – ripping away a sense of security and finality for crime victims who were promised their monsters would die behind bars. Now those criminals sentenced to death are one step closer to also being eligible for release from prison – and release from accountability. Today, the voices of criminals are louder than the cries of victims, and the governor should be ashamed of himself for twisting the knife into the hearts of victims who have already suffered the most unimaginable pain. @CAgovernor @GovPressOffice @GavinNewsom

I am disgusted by this heartless decision of @CAgovernor @GavinNewsom. Today, Governor Newsom has told the families of murder victims across California that the lives of the worst of the worst killers in our state are worth more than the lives of the innocent people they murdered. With a single decision, he has moved to erase the death sentence of every one of the 548 condemned inmates in California. It is an insult to every victim's family, and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms. Every one of those sentences was reached the way justice is always reached: one case at a time. A jury convicted each defendant of first-degree murder, found at least one special circumstance true beyond a reasonable doubt, weighed the evidence in a separate penalty trial, and chose death. A trial judge reviewed each verdict, and the California Supreme Court reviewed each case on automatic appeal. It appears that the Governor set all of that aside without examining the facts of a single case.
“Governor Newsom just told the families of Rachel Newhouse, Aundria Crawford, Kesha Gurke and every other innocent victim of California's 548 condemned killers that the killers' lives matter more. Juries chose justice case by case, voters chose it five times, and one outgoing governor is trying to erase it all with a pen. This is a sickening abuse of power.” – Dan Dow, District Attorney @dandow

The Governor's decision may not be final for everyone. Our Constitution does not allow a governor to commute the sentence of a person twice convicted of a felony unless the California Supreme Court recommends it, with four justices concurring. Both Rex Krebs and Michael Whisenhunt are twice-convicted felons. I respectfully call on the Justices to do what the Governor would not: examine each of these cases on its own facts and hear from the victims' families and the prosecutors before any recommendation is made.

To the families of Rachel, Aundria, and Kesha, and to every family of a murder victim in California: you have not been forgotten. This office has stood with you from the day your loved one was taken, and we will continue to stand with you now.

The rule of law prevails. Separation of powers does not allow judges to take control of core executive branch powers. We will conduct our criminal investigations without fear or favor.
BREAKING: In a 6-5 vote, the Ninth Circuit reinstated its earlier ruling lifting restrictions on the Trump administration's efforts to have states set aside suspected noncitizen ballots, allowing it to resume such requests and warn election officials of prosecution.

This Department of Justice will continue investigating and prosecuting voter fraud to restore confidence in our electoral system.” Read more about each voter fraud case: justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-d…

Proud to work with @USAttyEssayli to protect our California elections from ineligible noncitizen voting. It’s a serious crime in California.
.@USAttyEssayli addressed the media in Los Angeles today with @HSILosAngeles Special Agent in Charge Erin Burke, and San Luis Obispo County District Attorney @dandow about the latest arrests of and criminal charges against foreign nationals who illegally registered to vote in U.S. elections then allegedly lied about it on their forms to become naturalized U.S. citizens.
