It’s given me a framework to center my thinking on, and helped me to build relationships that help me understand the visible and invisible differences students bring to the class, their hopes, their expectations, and what they hope their experience in my class to be." ALT White and purple background. Title reads: Rowan's Law Day Toolkit. Image of Rowan Stringer, a white student with long brown hair smiling at the camera. A competitive and keen athlete, Rowan Stringer was captain of her high school’s rubgy team. Tragically, in May 2013, 17-year-old Rowan died as the result of what is known as Second Impact Syndrome —catastrophic swelling caused by a second injury to a brain still healing from previous trauma. Rowan collapsed on the field and died four days later. The Rowan’s Law Day Toolkit for Schools has been developed to help schools and classrooms recognize Rowan’s Law Day and encourage students to speak up about concussions. The toolkit includes: A list of concussion awareness activities for schools; Information about Rowan Stringer & Rowan’s Law Day; Ready-to-go social media posts for Facebook & X; Printable posters; and, Links to additional concussion resources. ALT The call for Culturally Responsive and Relevant Pedagogy (CRRP) requires educators to not only embrace and celebrate individual differences, but also act on the knowledge about cultural differences to provide meaningful and relevant learning experiences. How does your awareness of your own cultural identity impact your instruction and your relationship with your students? What patterns do you observe in the cultural values and norms of your practice? How could you expand your own learning on culture to support the engagement and academic success of more students?
