Remembering the brilliant @DameRutherford 54 years after her passing. No moment captures her inimitable charm better than her delightful unscripted twist-dancing scene in MURDER AT THE GALLOP (1963) where she effortlessly out-danced the younger crowd and won our hearts forever.🌹

The first is far and away the best. Uniquely and completely British. But as someone else has just said, the blueprint is really this with headmaster Alistair Sim at war with headmistress Margaret Rutherford whose girls are foisted upon his boys’ school during WW2. Utter heaven.

Classic shot of Dame Margaret Rutherford from the 1963 Murder at the Gallop.
ALT A dramatic black and white still of actress Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple from the 1963 film 'Murder at the Gallop'. Her face is heavily shadowed on one side as she peers wide eyed over a wooden ledger or windowsill, partially hidden by textured curtains.

Drama about the deep and quiet pain of everyday life used to be everywhere on television. Not so much now. I miss it.

Joan Hickson was wonderful, Angela Lansbury super — but MARGARET RUTHERFORD will always be my favourite Miss Marple.

Weirdly Joan appeared in a Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple film as a housekeeper....& also.....
In the 1940s Joan Hickson appeared on stage in Appointment with Death, a play by Agatha Christie, who wrote in a note to her, "I will call you to play my 'Miss Marple' one day, if I can find the time to write another play"....didn't happen for almost 40 years but eventually it did !

Perhaps she would have been in a universe where the magnificent Margaret Rutherford never took on the role.

Fascinating - as someone who has loved Agatha Christie novels and films since I was a teenager, and collected all her books at one time, here's a very interesting new development
