I would have loved to have heard the political discourse
Hadrian's Wall is not the border between England and Scotland. It never has been. It runs entirely inside England, and always did. Begun in 122 AD. Eighty Roman miles, coast to coast: 73 in modern measure. A milecastle at every Roman mile. Two turrets between each one. And a gate through the Wall at every milecastle. Eighty gates through your own defensive barrier. That is not how you stop an army. That is how you control who crosses. Behind it ran the Vallum: a second ditch, banked either side, almost the whole length. Twenty years after work began, Rome moved its frontier north, and built a new wall across what is now central Scotland. Twenty years after that, they came back to Hadrian's Wall, and held it for another two centuries. 🏛️

This must have been the mother of all pub crawls - Here are the pubs of the Isle of Dogs - this map shows just 41 of them clustered around the docks - only a handful remain... the-east-end.co.uk #eastend #History #pubs
