A little about me: I’m a child of the ’80s and ’90s, raised in rural Mississippi, where comics weren’t exactly easy to come by. Money was tight, and most of the books I got found their way into my hands through trades with friends or from the spinner racks at grocery stores. Back then, every comic felt like treasure. Even with a small collection, comics were a huge part of my childhood. The books I owned were read until the covers softened, flipped through countless times, and copied over and over as I tried to recreate the art I loved so much. Looking back, those comics helped spark something in me that never really went away. They played a big part in shaping my love for art and eventually led me to become an artist and art teacher. One character who always stood above the rest for me was Cable. There was just something about him—the look, the attitude, the mystery, and everything that came with the character. He’s been one of my all-time favorites for as long as I can remember. A rare personal post: When Devin (my wife) was diagnosed with cancer roughly three years ago, my desire to paint all but disappeared. Back in March of this year, a sudden urge to paint came over me, so I did. I painted a sunset. It ended up being the last painting I made while Devin was still here with us. I find it fitting that a sunset was the subject of that painting. After months of having no desire to paint, that feeling has slowly started to return over the past couple of days. So, I painted this today. It’s the first painting I’ve done since her passing. It’s a morning landscape from right behind our house—a place Devin, the kids, and I walked many times together. I find it fitting that this would be the subject of my first painting since losing her.
