Nana Patekar was far more than the intense actor audiences knew from films such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi and Natsamrat. Before stardom, he painted cinema posters for ₹35 a month, studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art, worked in advertising and built himself through Marathi theatre. Later, he trained with the Indian Army for Prahaar, spent around 60 days with troops during the Kargil War, developed a serious interest in farming and cooking, and helped establish the Naam Foundation to work with farmers and water conservation in Maharashtra. His was an unusually lived-in career, shaped as much by poverty, theatre, art, soldiers and rural India as by cinema. Some actors play characters. Nana Patekar seemed to inhabit them. Parinda. Krantiveer. Agni Sakshi. Ab Tak Chhappan. Apaharan. Raajneeti. Natsamrat. And, of course, Uday Shetty in Welcome. Across almost five decades, Patekar could be terrifying, vulnerable, funny, furious and deeply moving, sometimes within the same performance. He died in Goa on October 8, aged 75, after a cardiac arrest, and Indian cinema has lost one of its most unmistakable performers. The voice, the pauses, the stare, the sudden eruption - all of it will remain. Rest in peace, Nana Patekar. Inflation is rising, but growth remains strong, with FY27 GDP growth forecast at 7.1%. For borrowers, the era of falling rates may be over for now.
