Today, we bid farewell to a team of young Somali engineers and geologists from the Somali Petroleum Authority (SPA) who are departing for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to undertake specialized Safety and Emergency Training in preparation for their participation in Somalia’s offshore petroleum exploration program. Somalia advances its offshore exploration activities, ensuring that our professionals are equipped with internationally recognized safety standards and emergency preparedness skills is essential. This training will strengthen the capacity of Somali experts to contribute safely and effectively to the development of our petroleum sector. We wish the team a successful training program and look forward to their return as they prepare to play an important role in this historic phase of Somalia’s energy journey. #Somalia #SPA #OffshoreExploration #SafetyFirst #EmergencyResponse #CapacityBuilding #Malaysia

Today, I had the privilege of opening the Needs Assessment Workshop for Somalia’s upcoming Licensing Round, attended by technical teams from the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, the Somali Petroleum Authority (SPA), and the Ministry of Finance. Somalia prepares to launch a future licensing round, and it is essential that we strengthen our institutional readiness, align our technical, regulatory, and fiscal frameworks, and ensure that the process meets international best practices. Careful preparation is key to building investor confidence and maximizing the value of our natural resources for the benefit of the Somali people. I thank the Canadian High Commission for its valuable support of this program and its continued partnership in strengthening Somalia’s institutional capacity and development efforts. #Somalia #Petroleum #Energy #LicensingRound #Investment

I am honoured to join a high-level panel on Regional Mining Value Addition Efforts alongside: Hon. Hassan Ali Joho,CS of Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Kenya Hon. Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals Development & Chairman of the African Minerals Strategy Group, Nigeria H.E. Anthony Peter Mavunde, Minister for Minerals, United Republic of Tanzania H.E. Martin Abucha, Minister of Mining, Republic of South Sudan In my intervention, I emphasized that for Somalia, value addition must be anchored in regional integration, regulatory certainty, and infrastructure development. Unlocking our mineral potential requires moving beyond raw exports toward processing, beneficiation, and regional value chains that create jobs and retain wealth within Africa. Stronger coordination across our countries will reduce fragmentation, attract responsible investment, and position Africa as a competitive hub for mineral-based industrialization. #mice2026

Somalis are increasingly fed up with so-called scholars who judge national issues based on personal interests rather than the national interest. Soomaalidu waxaay ka daaleen waxa loogu yeero aqoonyahanno ku qiimeeya arrimaha qaran danahooda gaarka ah halkii ay ka eegi lahaayeen danta guud ee qaranka.

I am deeply concerned by the recent remarks of Abdi Ismail Samatar (@ProfAbdiSamatar), portraying the Somalia–Türkiye defense and petroleum agreements as fraudulent, illegitimate, or “neo-colonial.” These assertions misrepresent a partnership grounded in sovereign decision-making, mutual respect, and the national interests of the Somali people. These agreements were entered into transparently and in full alignment with Somalia’s legal and institutional frameworks. They reflect a deliberate effort to strengthen national capacity, enhance security cooperation, and responsibly develop our natural resources for the benefit of present and future generations. As a sitting senator, Mr. Samatar has both the access and the responsibility to seek clarification through the appropriate official channels. It is therefore regrettable to see such conclusions presented publicly without prior engagement or reference to the facts. Constructive scrutiny is welcome—but it must be informed, balanced, and evidence-based.
Türkiye – Somalia:  A semi colonial relationship! Five years ago, I wrote an opinion piece about the evolving relationship between Somalia and Türkiye. The essay pointed out the imbalance in the relationship and warned that the structure of the relationship did not bode well for Somalia and Somalis. Tragically, developments since then have vindicated the prognosis the essay made. Our country is increasingly becoming a fiefdom for Türkiye interest and the derelict regime in Mogadishu behaves like a Bantustan. dailymaverick.co.za/opinioni…

Today was a historic and memorable day, as the welcoming ceremony for the oil drilling vessel Cagri Bey, which arrived in the country yesterday, was successfully held at a high level. It was an honor for me to hold a productive meeting today at the Ministry’s office with fuel importers in the country. The purpose was to assess the national fuel supply situation, price fluctuations, and challenges emerging from global markets. We focused on ensuring a steady supply of fuel across the country, addressing price pressures linked to global changes, and strengthening transparency in pricing and distribution processes. The traders pledged to intensify their efforts to ensure there are no disruptions in the country’s fuel reserves. The Government of Somalia is committed to working closely with fuel importers to maintain market stability, protect consumers, and ensure a continuous fuel supply that supports national security, the economy, and public services.

The signing of the MOU with the historic mining state of West Virginia and the Senate resolution adopted by the West Virginia Senate reflect the success of the Federal Government of Somalia’s economic diplomacy and our determination to position Somalia in the global supply chains of critical minerals. In an era shaped by the energy transition, AI, and advanced technologies, Somalia has much to offer in natural resources and sees partnership with US actors as decisive in unlocking investment, technology, and access to global markets.
