How it started/How it’s going

Meet Ava Conrad. Ava is a student at Eastern Michigan University and is in the Alpha XI Delta sorority. Her father is Jeff Konrad, who works at DTE energy and he also went to EMU. She thinks it's funny to make videos using the sound of Charlie Kirk getting shot.

She had a dream of the perfect husband and a baby girl. She was granted that dream. Now, she tells TikTok that she is full of rage because her baby girl “is a parasite” who has sucked every bit of joy and freedom out of her life.

He was 34. Off duty. Waiting to tee off at Forest Park in Queens. When I lived in queens, I would run through the tree infested park. The sun would filter through the welcoming shade in geometric rays of light in the heat of the summer. Michael was supposed to play golf. Then a plane hit the World Trade Center. His sister Patricia worked on the 72nd floor of the South Tower. Michael Weinberg did not wait. He ran without hesitation. Traffic stopped him. He left his car in Long Island City and climbed onto whatever emergency vehicle would take him closer. He reached Engine 1, Ladder 24. He geared up. He drove Chaplain Mychal Judge and Captain Daniel Brethel toward the towers. His sister got out. He did not. When the South Tower came down, Weinberg and Brethel tried to take cover under a fire truck. None of them made it. His father Morty, a firefighter himself, said he knew immediately. There was no question in his voice. Only the certainty of a father who understood exactly what his son had run toward. That morning his older brother called Patricia on the Brooklyn Bridge and said, “Thank God you’re all right. And Michael is on vacation.” At that same moment, Michael was already there. He made his choice in the time it takes to put down a golf club. My brother was a volunteer medic who ran towards danger. My firefighter buddy, Mario was unreachable. I thought he was gone. He survived and has a beautiful family after that horrific attack This beautiful and heroic man did not Rest easy, Michael.

Army Lt. Col. Marilyn Wills was, as always, early that morning. She stopped by her office first to grab a sweater, since the building ran cold, then headed into a routine personnel meeting with about a dozen coworkers. Nobody in that room yet knew two planes had already hit the World Trade Center. At 9:37 a.m., that changed instantly. American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon’s west side, and the conference room Wills was in took the impact almost directly. She was thrown across the table, her hair caught fire, and the room went completely dark with smoke. She started crawling toward a door, but the handle burned her hand before she could open it, and flames blocked that route entirely. She turned and crawled the opposite direction instead. Then a hand grabbed the back of her belt. It was Lois Stevens, a civilian coworker, injured and struggling to breathe. Without hesitation, Wills told her to stay close, that wherever she went, Lois would go too. She couldn’t see her own hand in front of her face, but she guided Lois and several other survivors through the wreckage by voice and instinct alone, forming a line of people following her through the dark. At one point, Lois’s clothing was melting from the heat, and she told Wills she couldn’t keep going. Wills didn’t accept that, telling her to climb onto her back, and carried her the rest of the way. The group eventually reached a sealed window, pounding on it until the glass finally broke, letting in air and allowing everyone to climb out to rescuers waiting below. Wills stayed inside until everyone else had made it out first. Three people from that meeting didn’t survive, among 184 total lives lost at the Pentagon that day, including the highest-ranking officer killed in the attacks. Lois Stevens survived and lived until 2024, passing away at 83, more than two decades she got because a colonel refused to leave without her. Wills spent nine days in the hospital recovering from burns, smoke inhalation, and a traumatic brain injury that stayed with her long afterward, along with lasting effects like flinching at aircraft overhead for years. She returned to work at the Pentagon anyway, and later deployed to Afghanistan. She received the Soldier’s Medal and the Purple Heart, though she’s never been comfortable with being called a hero, saying simply that she lost friends that day. She could have gotten out and saved only herself. Instead, she meant it, all the way to that window, all the way out.
