Fifty plus. One kid. Here's what I wish someone had told me at 35.
You don't balance it all. You rotate. Some years the career eats most of you. Some years the kids need you at every match and every exam. Some years your body sends you a bill. Pick the priority for this season and stop apologising for the ones on pause.
Kids rarely remember the big gestures. They remember the boring stuff. The same drive to school. The Sunday breakfast. The dad who put the phone face down when they started talking.
They also watch how you handle a bad day. Telling your son I messed up at work today, I'm tired teaches him more than any speech about resilience.
Pretending to be invincible just hands him the same burden 25 years later. The guilt is optional. It makes you worse at the very things you feel guilty about.
Drop a few balls. Just make sure you know which ones bounce.
DAD TO DAD:
You cannot work 50 hours a week, hit the gym every morning, build wealth, keep the house in order, be an amazing husband, show up fully for your kids, maintain friendships, pursue hobbies, eat perfectly, read every night, and still have unlimited energy left for yourself.
Something will eventually give.
And too many fathers are walking around feeling like failures because they cannot do everything at once.
Social media tells you to be a provider, a present father, a devoted husband, a successful entrepreneur, an athlete, and a man who never complains about being tired.
But you're human. Not a machine.
Your kids don't need a father who has mastered every aspect of life. They need a father who loves them, listens to them, makes time for them, and keeps showing up.
Your family needs your presence more than your perfection.
Build your career. Take care of your health. Chase your dreams. But stop measuring your worth against an impossible standard.
You don't have to excel at everything to be a great dad. Sometimes, doing enough is more than enough.

Western PA has a very difficult time attracting out of region workers bc our pay is so low and the region lacks most amenities workers can find elsewhere. Paid family leave is an excellent start to attract new residents- which I *thought* was what people were saying they wanted

Being 10x more involved with your kid than your parents ever were with you, while somehow feeling 100x more guilty about falling short, is the official millennial parenting experience.
Very Cool
BREAKING: Allegheny County passes a 12-week parental leave for employers with 15 or more workers. PA does not have any statewide parental leave rules and Allegheny County will become the first county in the state to have one. axios.com/local/pittsburgh/2…

I thought I was imagining that mass market chocolate had become completely inedible so I'd glad it wasn't just me. Finally, journalists are doing their jobs and investigating real problems again!
This past Valentine’s Day, 71-year-old Brad Reese, proud grandson of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups inventor H. B. Reese, posted a scathing open letter to the manager of corporate brand and editorial at Hershey, accusing the company of unforgivably altering many Reese’s products by replacing real chocolate with compound chocolate — basically using vegetable oils instead of cocoa butter to lower costs and replacing real peanut butter with “peanut-butter-style crèmes.”
“And Reese wasn’t alone in feeling like everything was getting worse,” writes Rachel Handler. “Everyone in my life I spoke to agreed that something was amiss, that Reese’s — and commercial chocolate in general — didn’t taste the way it used to.”
Handler would spend the next several months tumbling down a chocolate vortex, encountering dozens of eccentric characters, all disagreeing about the fundamental question of what chocolate even is and who it should be for.
“I learned that — not to sound like a LinkedIn guy — what’s going on with chocolate is a parable for the modern world. That at this particularly bleak end stage of capitalism, everything we once treasured has or will lose its essential essence and MrBeast will always be involved somehow.”
For our cover story, Handler takes a deep dive into the molten belly of the chocolate world. Read it in full: nymag.visitlink.me/vKKky_

But if you want to look at an old story on city finances. I feel I hectored Potter to get the only known quote on the record from the city’s pension actuary in this. Worth a read:

I met my wife while
Volunteering - idk if we would have ever connected on an app
Someone told me he thinks dating apps are bad because they let you access connection without having any motion in your life. Normally meeting people requires going out into the world, entering new scenes and navigating unfamiliar situations. You have to be living a life that brings you into contact with other people. Dating apps let you order connection without doing any of that work
Just give parents paid leave yall truly hate families and children
