The Durham Regional Police Service is deeply concerned by the increase in hate-related incidents and reports of hateful rhetoric affecting members of our community, including the two recent incidents from this week.
Hate, in any form, has no place in Durham Region.
We recognize the fear, anxiety, and uncertainty these incidents can create for individuals, families, and entire communities. I want residents to know that DRPS takes all reports of hate incidents and hate crimes seriously. Our members investigate these matters thoroughly and work closely with affected communities to ensure concerns are heard, addressed, and supported.
While we cannot always share details of active investigations, our commitment remains unwavering: to protect the safety and well-being of all residents and to hold those responsible for criminal acts accountable.
DRPS will continue to engage with policing partners, community leaders, provide support to those affected, and share information publicly when appropriate. We are also actively monitoring developments, gathering intelligence, and adjusting our patrol and operational response as necessary to ensure community safety.
Every individual in Durham Region deserves to feel safe, respected, and free from hatred and discrimination. We will always ensure Durham Region remains a place where all residents are safe.

Today, @DRPS came together to honour and remember Constable in Training (CIT) Tyrone Magbitang.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined Tyrone’s family, friends, and colleagues to celebrate his life and recognize the profound impact he had on so many.
Tyrone’s kindness, compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to others left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. While his life was far too short, his legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the friendships he built, and the example he set.
We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to our policing partners who stood beside Tyrone’s family and the Durham Regional Police Service throughout this difficult week. In particular, we thank the Ontario Provincial Police (@OPPNews), London Police Service (@lpsmediaoffice), and Toronto Police Service (@TorontoPolice) for their extraordinary compassion, professionalism, and support. Your members went above and beyond, and your kindness will never be forgotten.
We also wish to recognize and thank Dignity Memorial, Oshawa Funeral Home, Scarborough Funeral Centre, and Embassy Church for their exceptional support in coordinating the visitations, transportation, and funeral services. Their professionalism and care were instrumental in ensuring these arrangements were carried out with dignity and respect.
To Tyrone’s family and loved ones, please know that you remain in our thoughts and that the DRPS family stands with you today and in the days ahead.
Tyrone will always be remembered as one of our own.
Please keep our fellow Constable-in-Training in your thoughts. We remain hopeful about their continued recovery.
Chief Peter Moreira
