When will @instinct have this too??

Does the world really need another smart young investor with a generalist tech fund?
Having a strong network isnāt enough anymore. Everyone has access to one.
You need a genuinely unique perspective and an edge you truly believe in.
Otherwise, why venture into venture capital at all?
This business is hard and soul-crushing. Unless youāre passionate about it and truly believe you can be great, donāt enter venture capital.
Whatās your unique edge?

A friend reminded me today that we can get into a mindset of chasing the next best thing too much when the best thing might already be in front of you.
Scary times in startups
so i have been in the sf tech scene for a couple of months now, and i learned the games that ppl play
1. land a $3M lab order in 2 weeks, *26 = ~$80m as the annual revenue
2. schedule all orders to be signed in the same month, and multiply the best month by 12
3. sign $5M LOIs with friend's companies and batchmates. they sign one back (also happens at scale with large labs/compute)
4. buy github stars at 6 cents each
the last company that swapped invoices with a partner reported $220M - and it's bankrupt now
sad that it's a whole gresham's law game right now and if you dont play you just get downvoted

Peter Thiel has a blunt test for whether a startup team is thinking clearly.
Watch how they talk about their own outcomes.
His observation: when founders start framing results as luck ā "maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, so let's just invest a little and see" ā that's not prudent risk management. That's a diagnostic failure.
The mechanism is specific. Luck-framing doesn't emerge from humility. It emerges from not having done the analytical work to understand *why* your business will win. If you've truly mapped the competitive dynamics, the customer psychology, the timing ā you don't describe the outcome as a coin flip. You describe what needs to be true and why.
The portfolio mindset ("let's see what happens") is what you default to when you don't have conviction built on evidence.
Thiel's sharpest version of this: the founders of Google, Amazon, and Apple in their early days weren't operating on hope. They had specific theories about why they would win that others couldn't see yet. Bezos mapped out why e-commerce would scale through selection and logistics before the market existed. That's not luck-denial ā that's rigorous foresight presented as conviction.
When a founding team tells you "we'll figure it out," the question isn't whether they're optimistic. It's whether they can articulate the actual mechanism of their advantage.
If they can't, the luck framing isn't a personality trait. It's a capability gap.
Blaming luck is what you do when you've stopped thinking.

Built on our state-of-the-art search engine, with the data most AIs can't reach.
To celebrate, reply below and I'll DM you 5,000 free credits! š
Also why Iāve been encouraging all our young founders to move to sf asap
Love learning about the back story and biography of musicians and the meaning of their songs through talking to chat. Such a great interactive learning tool.
Tried getting muse to send some emails today for me and while it looked good on the drafts, it added a bunch of additional characters I didnāt recognize when it sent⦠apologies to folks that received it š I hope they know itās muse and not me lol
*maybe itās time to add the āsent by my museā in the signature lol
The late stage growth SPV market is actually insane these days. Attended an event in nyc that had dozens of people that all had āanthropic secondariesā.
Love that the nba season is back in action. And cool to see someone like Tyrese Haliburton cooking again after a year recovering from injury. Nothing like a good comeback season.
