my conspiracy theory is that the cancelling double spaces after periods thing was to reduce token costs ahead of LLM ingestion.
I hate the Chinese room for two reasons.
1. the argument assumes that the room can translate Chinese "perfectly". But: the only way for the room to translate "perfectly" is if it encodes understanding in some form in the first place. The setup is self contradictory.
Second. The argument confuses the process with you the operator. The understanding is encoded in the instructions. But the argument says "well you don't understand Chinese". No shit. Its the *process*, not you, that understands Chinese. It works just as the ATP molecules powering your brain don't understand your thoughts.
In short the Chinese room thought experiment is two compounded layers of logical sleight of hand. You can be forgiven if you fell for it, but if you think its some sort of brilliant analogy you are thinking sloppily.

In light of the progress in mathematics, we at Edison Scientific and FutureHouse have assembled a set of Millennium Problems for Biology. They are chosen to be very hard to solve but very easy to validate in a simple laboratory environment. Any of these, if solved, would mark a major advance in biotechnology, and most of them would contribute materially towards curing disease. These are, in some sense, the “last reasonable eval” for AI in biology. This was work primarily by @MichaelaThinks and myself, with contributions from many others.

This is an insane story:
An energy company in Poland signed a deal on a yacht in Abu Dhabi to buy 6 million barrels of oil for $345 million.
Because of sanctions, the money was delivered via crypto. USB sticks containing wallet keys were given to sellers in Caracas.
The Polish company they sent tankers to pick up the oil and were ghosted by the Venezuelans, while their empty tankers sat off the coast waiting for a reply.
