1/10 I spent my PhD at ETH Zürich building pieces of an eDNA puzzle. Now I see them fit together in our new paper!
Years of method development, fieldwork and ideas that once seemed out of reach. Here is what we found, and what I think comes next.
9/10 So much remains unknown, which can feel daunting when we want reliable monitoring tools.
I see possibilities here too. Could we choose eDNA states to assess current occupancy, investigate past biodiversity or reveal hydrological processes we cannot yet see?
10/10 I often say that some of the best applications of eDNA have yet to be imagined. This work makes me want to keep exploring them.
Proud to share it with @alpineedna Enrico van der Loo and Zora Doppmann!

1/6 Six years ago, during my master's, I developed one of the early prototypes of passive eDNA samplers.
Now I find myself coming back to it, asking a slightly different question:
What actually happens to eDNA once on these samplers? Preprint 👇
5/6 Understanding the first principles behind eDNA capture and loss will be important for the next stage of passive sampler development.
It's been wonderful to watch this field grow over six years, see new ideas emerge, and now return to some of its fundamental questions.

A small piece of happy news: two papers we published in 2024 ended up in the top 10% most-read papers in their respective journals. It's so gratifying to know that our work is having an impact!
These papers are a reminder that science is a collaborative process. Ideas develop when people with different perspectives spend time thinking through them together. A lot of what ended up in these papers came from discussions in the field, lab meetings, and coffee chats.
I am grateful to everyone who contributed to the work, and to the people who took the time to read and engage with it. Here are are links to the papers >>> Environmental DNA: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/… and >>> WIRES water: wires.onlinelibrary.wiley.co…
