Over the month of September, the Russian net gains were negative 190 km2. This marks the greatest monthly net territorial loss for Russia in our dataset since the June of 2023. (1/12)

If you have been watching the chessboard and how the pieces have been moving since the start of the year, you know where this is headed.
❗️Putin says Russia “knows” about alleged violations of the rights of Russian speakers in the Baltic states and has “already developed an approach” to respond. He insists Russia will act only through humanitarian and international-law mechanisms. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like we’ve heard the “protecting Russian speakers abroad” part of this story before.

As with most wars and genocides in africa, a mixture of local dictators clinging to power and global apathy leads to an enormous amount of suffering.
It’s hard to understate how catastrophic a full blown war in Ethiopia is at this time. Combine it with the genocide in Sudan, the wars in Yemen and Somalia and you have a humanitarian disaster of biblical proportions. It could have been avoided, but the world simply did not care

Today, the true war in Ethiopia ha begun. And it's only one of many that are about to restart. Most of them will also be converged, with players fighting their civil war interfering in another. Nobody sane to stop this. This is what most of the world cheered for. Good luck.

Mediazona has updated its count of confirmed Russian KIA to 258 989 But due to their strict methodology, it is a huge undercount - IMO, the actual number is now around 600K

Putin rigged the election again, and sloppily. The diagonal line is the first giveaway. In a clean election, turnout and United Russia’s share should not be tightly linked. Here they rise in lockstep. After five years of war and fuel shortages, turnout and support for the ruling party wouldn’t rise together mechanically. This result happens if add fake ballots to precincts. You have 1,000 registered voters in a precinct and the actual turnout is 30% and let’s say UR gets 90 votes. You add 400 fake ballots for UR and you have 700 votes cast, or 70% turnout, with UR getting 490 votes, or 70%. The dotted lines are the second tell. If officials repeatedly fake results around the same round percentages, the dots pile up at those numbers and form visible lines. Edit: chart added
Turnout (x axis) v. United Russia (blue), KPRF (red), LDPR (yellow), New People (cyan) share of the vote in 2026. Official result vs. real vote (eyeballing): UR: 58% / 35% KPRF: 14% / 25% LDPR: 9% / 15% New People: 8% / 15% (still very partial results) neshodilina.netlify.app/scat…

I don’t think Putin expects to conquer Europe. Russia has struggled enormously in Ukraine; occupying NATO territory on any meaningful scale is simply beyond its capabilities at the moment. The more plausible objective is to weaken the European security order without ever fighting NATO head-on: test its red lines, intimidate its publics, undermine support for Ukraine and, above all, create doubt about whether Article 5 would actually be honoured. There’s a game-theory logic to the drones, sabotage, cyberattacks and information warfare. Keep each provocation ambiguous and individually too small to justify escalation. If NATO responds forcefully, pull back. If it doesn’t, you’ve learned something about where the real red line lies and can push a little further next time. The obvious danger is miscalculation. Russia pushes too far, NATO misreads Russian intentions, or an incident causes casualties that demand a response. A strategy designed to operate below the threshold of war can then produce precisely the broader and more protracted conflict neither side necessarily intended. There are historical echoes here: Soviet “active measures” and the Berlin crises similarly sought to exploit Western divisions and test Western resolve without triggering a direct superpower war. There is also the more uncomfortable lesson of the 1930s: incremental revisionism can exploit opponents who regard each individual challenge as too small to justify confrontation. The West is particularly vulnerable today. European societies spent decades assuming major interstate war had become essentially obsolete, underinvesting in defence while becoming more politically polarised and susceptible to information warfare. Younger Western generations, who know no war and are overall mentally weaker than their predecessors and are distracted by nonsense, inhabit an information environment in which foreign actors can reach enormous audiences at negligible cost. We’ve already seen how effectively malign Middle Eastern actors and their proxies can exploit Western divisions; Russia has decades of experience doing the same. NATO itself recognises manipulation designed to create confusion, deepen divisions and weaken the alliance as part of the Russian threat (if only it were equally alert to the Trojan horse sitting within its own walls, on Europe’s southeastern edge...). The US is the key variable. European deterrence ultimately rests on Moscow believing that attacking a NATO member risks war with the United States. If Moscow begins to doubt American willingness to fight for Europe, the calculation changes dramatically. That uncertainty is particularly consequential at a moment when Washington is demanding that Europeans shoulder far more responsibility for their own defence. So Putin doesn’t actually have to dissolve NATO. If he can make Europeans doubt that America will come, Americans question why they should come, and individual allies wonder whether everyone else will honour their commitments, he has already weakened the alliance enormously. That is the real danger, I believe: not Russian tanks reaching Paris, but Moscow discovering, one small test at a time, that Western deterrence can be hollowed out politically without ever having to defeat it militarily.
What does Putin want? He hasn’t managed to prevail in Ukraine, so what is he trying to achieve with drone attacks in Europe? Does he want to break up NATO? And then what? What does he think he can actually accomplish?

Not much left to say about this. It is constant and deliberate targeting of civilians by the Russians. It is a campaign of terrorism.

“He used 21st-century resources to fight a 20th-century war, attempting to revive a 19th-century imperial map, and in the end, squandered Russia's 22nd century.”

I want to reiterate this: The fact that Russia is now confident enough to do attacks in Europe, is because we did nothing when their drones entered Romania a few years ago. A long chain of doing nothing after doing nothing that emboldened the Russians to escalate more and more.
