The public has a right & a duty to understand immigration policy. I used to help out with that as a reporter; now I do it at @immcouncil. All tweets my own.

We don’t have any system of monitoring the safety of people deported to anywhere. Period.
It’s a simple question: Did the Biden administration make sure none of the passengers on a June deportation flight to China are members of ethnic groups the U.S. government has said are facing genocide? But getting an answer has been close to impossible. notus.org/foreign-policy/new…

I think @DLind is no longer on the bird app, but we have to bring back "Trump made word noises out of his mouth hole" for stuff like his spitballing about green cards.

We explained exactly this dynamic in our analysis of Tuesday's actions. An executive order and an asylum ban fundamentally do not address the basic operational, diplomatic, and legal limitations that would be required to just turn everyone away. americanimmigrationcouncil.o…

One piece of advice I got early in my career + often repeat: You SHOULD be at least *a little* worried that you got everything right the night before a story comes out. If you're not, you may be prone to overconfidence + certitude + this probably isn't the right business for you.
Meanwhile, most reporters and nonfiction writers are gripped by what @MauriceChammah calls "the error terrors": staring at the ceiling at 3 a.m. right before a story comes out, agonizing over whether you made the teeniest, tiniest mistake

Title 42 is sometimes touted as the solution to illegal crossings at the US border While the nearly 3 million expulsions might indicate success, the number of migrants crossing the US border without being intercepted actually surged Our article explains: migrationpolicy.org/article/…

San Diego has surpassed Tucson, becoming the top border region for migrant arrivals for the first time in decades. I wrote about the history of of migration route shifts (h/t @adam_wola) latimes.com/politics/story/2…
San Diego, California (blue) is now the busiest of Border Patrol's 9 U.S.-Mexico border sectors. Migrant arrivals rose 36% in 2 weeks. Volunteers providing humanitarian aid to asylum seekers waiting in open-air sites have a wishlist for needed items here: amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/33…

It's terrible to lose such a talented reporter
Today is my last day @wamu885. It's bittersweet. I believe in the mission of local journalism. &I respect and admire my colleagues - including @margaretbarthel, @ecwilliams30, @kaylahhewitt, @WhyBlitz, @yesl_kim - so much. But I need to step away from WAMU and the news industry.

Daily #Border Links: March 27, 2024 CBP data for first 21 days of March point to a very rare springtime reduction in #migration at the border since February. Stepped-up interdiction in #Mexico may be the reason. For a version with working links, go to borderoversight.org/news

Among other things, this sends a *very strong* signal that the panel is likely to *deny* Texas's application for a stay pending appeal. So #SB4 will remain blocked *indefinitely,* unless *Texas* persuades #SCOTUS to put it back into effect.

#BREAKING: #SB4 is blocked again. A majority of the Fifth Circuit panel hearing argument on Texas's stay application *tomorrow morning* just issued an order "dissolving" the "administrative stay" that a different panel imposed on March 2. So the injunction goes back into effect.

Yup. When we interviewed migrants on the Mexico side last year, they were trying and retrying repeatedly until an appointment could be secured. Many had been trying for months.

Great piece by @camiloreports It is common for migrant flows to shift from sector to sector often due to a variety of intersecting reasons. Currently AZ and CA are recording 60% of encounters btwn POEs, a notable shift away from TX.
The flow of migrants crossing into the US illegally has largely shifted away from Texas, concentrating instead in Arizona and California, where officials are now recording roughly 60% of all unlawful border crossings, internal statistics show. My latest: cbsnews.com/news/immigration…
