A note from a 1992 paper I just came across. We have been having this conversation for a *long* time!

For your own sanity, never listen to They Might Be Giants
sometimes you google "song lyrics meaning" and the response is "it doesnt have any the writer just said things" shouldnt be allowed. songs oughta have a meaning

Astra summoned up absolute BS on me just this week, claiming a theorem which was easily disproven by an example I’d already discussed with it. Mercifully it folded instantly when pressed, unlike previous models - but it is far from impossible for it to miss or spew nonsense!
My experience with Astra is that it is a hard taskmaster. It's almost impossible to sneak anything unrigorous past it. It found minor (but real) mathematical issues in my last paper that Sol never noticed. If it says something is wrong, it is usually right.

I suppose this does not disprove “if it says something is wrong, it is usually right”, and it’s actually evidence against “if it says something is right, it usually is”

If you see someone on here using a word that ends with -oid, you can safely disregard whatever they're saying. For instance, "A monad is a monoid in the category of endofunctors"

OpenAI should be MUCH more honest about the state of the "preprints", but "normal bad work" is not a helpful framing - a proof of QRH is not "normal" by any stretch of the imagination!

github.com/jeff87654/busy-be… Someone else formalized my 254-state "halts iff ZFC is inconsistent" Turing Machine. Claude is really good for this, apparently. So the 254th Busy Beaver cannot be proven in ZFC. That leaves only the 238-state PA machine, which will probably come soon.

Nah, linear algebra is an attempt to seduce future mathematicians into taking functional analysis
linear algebra is a psyop invented to kidnap mathematicians and brainwash them into becoming computer scientists

The most surprising thing is displaying a continuous density for a distribution whose categories can literally be counted on one's hands.
This is the least surprising graph in the world if you understand how gradient descent works.

An important version of Vaught's conjecture has been refuted! The original Vaught (for FOL) delenda est 🙏
A counterexample to Vaught’s conjecture for infinitary logic has been verified in Lean! In joint work with Nate Ackerman and Robin Knight, we developed and formalized a construction based on Knight’s unpublished manuscript.

Mathematical logic will be less threatened by AI than other fields of mathematics. Other mathematicians have already eliminated most of the jobs for logicians.

I'm not interested in commentary on math from people who never cared or thought about math prior to the moment it became useful for raising investment $$$ business valuation go up.

Man I understand the hatred towards mathematicians coming from people who genuinely struggled at math and other subjects, but seeing it from literal physics and philosophy professors is unreal. "Maybe their job shouldn't be subsidized" bro all of our jobs are for the same reason

my friend milo (math phd student at caltech, research intern at logical intelligence) wrote an article on some of the consistency and soundness concerns of Lean, and why they should be taken seriously right now: lesswrong.com/posts/zHhGa3iQ…
