After 5 years of hard work, rewrites, data collection, analysis, reading (oh the reading!), and a change of work place, I have finally graduated! I am eternally grateful to my incredible supervision team Dr. Andrea Mallaburn, Dr. Vik Brennan, and Dr. Rick Tynan. Thank you.

Criterion-referenced? No. Norm-referenced? Apparently not. It’s ’prior-achievement referenced’. But this shifting of grade boundaries *after* marking is done seems to me to be fraught with potential injustices for subjects where markers make judgements. See my comment below.

Teachers! Genuine question.
Do we think science GCSE falls behind maths and English because schools put more resources into the latter subjects due to impact on headline figures?
Please vote and comment. Thanks!🙂

[1] Worth a retweet for those who forget just how qualification levels work.
Claudia gets it. @amymayforrester gets it. Keep perpetuating a lie, & you're telling kids they will never be more.

I am trading in my Fiesta which is about as old as the time we have been teaching these. Why are the car dealers calling my car old?! 😭
GCSE grades explained 👇
Wondering how grades 9–1 compare to the old A*–G system?
Here's a quick guide to help make sense of the current grading system.
Save it now so you've got it to hand on Results Day.

A few friendly reminders as we head into GCSE results time:
1) Grades 1-3 are a pass
2) They are a level 1 GCSE
3) A U is a fail. Grades 1-3 are not.
For some students, grades 1-3 are a huge achievement. Do not denigrate their achievements by labelling them as failures.

SLTs planning to put huge pressure on HODs and Subject Leads after Thursday if the students results don't go to plan, a few things:
1. They are the students results
2. The profession needs every qualified and experienced person it can get
3. Please don't under estimate how much they care about the children and their job so criticism from you, based on things they may have had little control over, will be as frustrating as it is crushing
4. They might already be dreading the huge workload coming in September so please don't add to that dread
Oh, to the HODs/Subject Leads - if line managers sound ominous or offer no reassurance or don't sound like they really want you - Start looking for somewhere that will want and appreciate you immediately. Don't let anyone tell you or intimate to you that you aren't good enough based on a set of student results.
Reason I say all this - I've been there and got the T shirt. It almost finished me off, it ruined a particular summer. It ruined lots of things. So yeah, detach from these ppl and these ideas, free yourself from these limiting belief systems and reject this madness!

“I adapted the lesson to meet the needs of my students and got criticised for it”
Yasmin describes changing her lesson after realising her lower-set Year 8 class, which included a high proportion of SEND pupils, needed to revisit some fundamental knowledge.
But when a learning walk took place, she says she was criticised for being the only teacher on the corridor not teaching the same thing at the same time.
Should teachers be trusted to adapt lessons to the students in front of them? 👇

Scientists found a black fungus inside Chernobyl's reactor.
It appears to use radiation as fuel through radiosynthesis.
Couldn't agree more.
The teacher-vs-teacher and school-vs-school competition culture is damaging for education in the long run, IMO.
“My results.” “Our results.” “We outperform them.”
There are almost always factors that help explain why one teacher or school gets “better” exam outcomes than another:
• Covert or overt selection
• Differences in cohort background and prior attainment
• EAL and demographic factors
• Environmental and hereditary factors
• How heavily the school prioritises academic outcomes
• Parental attitudes to education, tutoring and support at home
• Cohort sizes
Teaching/Schools matter when it comes to exam outcomes but no where near as much as ppl often suggest.
Putting a blog and a podcast below that have helped me form my views on this...

Top work from Ross. I hope that @LucyMPowell will do what is necessary to stop the ongoing injustice

Of 921 full inspections, 210 schools (22.8%) were below the expected standard for curriculum and teaching.
The most deprived group of schools are 14.25% more likely to receive a below-expected curriculum and teaching judgement than the least deprived schools

Like many things in education, a booklet is a tool. On its own it is neither "good" not "bad". It is all down to the quality of the resource and it's implementation. If it puts a stranglehold on great teachers, is it really worth it? Good debate this.
Should teachers be forced to teach from booklets?
Former Athena teacher Robin Johnson says the introduction of booklets in his maths department was the “nail in the coffin” for him.
He accepts that booklets can be really useful for cover, less experienced teachers or long-term absence but argues that forcing experienced teachers to use them takes away their ability to respond to the pupils in front of them.
“I couldn’t be on rails.”
Are centrally produced booklets a great way to guarantee consistency or do they undermine teacher autonomy? 👇
