So. I just looked up a song I heard on the radio recently that I thought was new... Turns out it from 1989. 🤷

the internet was and is never a space intended for children.
we cannot baby-ify it because parents refuse to do their job.
maybe just don’t give your kids a bunch of tech you don’t want to monitor?
A lot of people really want adult content to be easily accessible to children, and if you as a parent don’t stay up to speed on every TOS update and every software change on every single device, website, app, video game, etc., and do the same at the homes of your kid’s friends, then you are a terrible parent according to the libertarians.
The libertarians are more concerned about adults having access to adult content than protecting children from harm, and even modest age verification options are too burdensome to their desire to see adult content.
This is where libertarians lose me, this “kids have a right to access porn” or “if your kid gets access to porn it’s the parents fault” argument. It’s utter nonsense. No amount of preparation by a parent can keep up with big tech advancements and a simple age verification step is a simple and elegant additional tool for parents to protect their kids, especially when they are with friends or at other people’s homes and you have less control or ability to monitor them.
As a parent I would love to have this tool set up.

No parent would accept forcing IKEA to child proof furniture because some parents don’t know how to use the proofing that’s already available to them.
Yet you’re told every adult should verify their identity to use the internet in the name of child safety.

The negligent "parents" blamed the TV for all their failures in the 90s. Then they blamed video games in the early 2000s.
Now they blame the internet.
Noticing a pattern yet?
While there is no doubt that this is very tragic, it's the end result of a much deeper underlying problem and shifting blame on the internet will do absolutely nothing to prevent it from happening again.
If you were to put Loser by Beck and Where have all the cowboys gone by Paula Cole together, you'd get this:

My initial impression is Total Recall meets Avatar.
Here's how identity verification lovers think, and it's a massive self-pwn.
Banning crank didn't stop anyone from using it if they want to. It did create a massive underground black market for dangerous, unpredictable product that funds organized crime though.

We can expect this research result to be swept under the rug/ignored or to be "shot down" by every other government. Even though we all know this is actually the truth.
A legal study commissioned by the Dutch government has concluded that forcing universal age verification on all users would be disproportionate and clash with the fundamental rights of both children and adults.
The researchers, at the University of Amsterdam, say privacy and freedom of information are at stake, that even the strictest checks are easily bypassed with VPNs or an adult's help, and that the EU's Digital Services Act already requires platforms to make age assurance effective, so rushing to mandate more is risky.
This matters because the Dutch coalition wants a European minimum age of 15 with "privacy-friendly" verification. The study is a caution to every government treating ID checks as the fix, the same fight is playing out in many countries right now.
All the identity verification in the world is no substitute for attentive, caring parents.
Seriously, if they aren't getting in trouble on the computer, they will be irl instead, like in the 80s and 90s before internet was what it is now.
Good parenting is the ONLY solution.
On this Social Media Harms Victim Remembrance Day, @HouseCommerce stands with families who have lost loved ones to the dangers of social media.
We are serving their memory by advancing legislation that protects children and empowers parents to keep them safe online — because every child deserves a safe digital future.
They, quite frankly, should stick thier "age verification 🙄" in any and every form right up their asses.
Discord is testing new ways to verify users’ ages, offering more options besides face scans and ID uploads.
The company is experimenting with age checks through Google Wallet and credit cards for a small number of users.
Discord is also testing selfie and ID verification with partner Incode, which processes facial scans directly on the user’s device so biometric data never leaves the phone.
Discord says most users will never need to manually verify their age. But for those who do, the company wants to offer several options instead of relying only on face scans or ID documents.
Okay, so I realize that early 90s style is the in thing right now, but a lot of the new/forthcoming media I'm seeing is grossly overdoing it... 🤷
