My take on wealth taxes is they won't work well at the local or state level, because you're targeting the people with the greatest means and motivation to just pick up and move somewhere, and they won't work well at the national level, because they'd almost certainly require a constitutional amendment, just as federal income taxes did (the 16th Amendment), so in both cases you're creating a levy that is basically designed to disappear.
California's Billionaire Tax Act would collect roughly $30 billion. Accounting for lost income taxes from departures, the mean Net Present Value is negative $39 billion, from Benjamin Jaros and Joshua Rauh nber.org/papers/w35899

Oregon has a ban on firearms at all schools. This hero father is going to have a hell of a fight ahead of him.
#BREAKING: A father shot and killed the Silver Rail Elementary school shooter —police scanner.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Oregon law does not impose a statewide ban on firearms at all schools. Districts may prohibit concealed handgun licensees from carrying on grounds (making violations a misdemeanor), but most of the state's 197 districts have not; Bend-La Pine Schools has such a policy.

Chicago's pensions are only 28% funded. Every payment we skip explodes our debt.
Skipping pension payments isn’t a plan, it’s fiscal mismanagement.
Here's my 3-step fix: consolidate the four pension funds, establish a revenue lockbox to guarantee annual payments, and launch a voluntary buyout program.
I want to save our pensions, and I'm the only candidate in the race for mayor with the proven skills and experience to do it.

89% of seniors (age 65+) believe current retirees’ Social Security benefits should be protected, even if that means higher taxes on younger workers.
Gen Z (Americans under 30) are 8x more likely than seniors to support reducing benefits for current and future retirees to address Social Security’s financial problems.

What’s the evidence on rent control?
I charted the findings from 112 studies:
Great for rent-controlled tenants ✅
But:
Pushes up rents for other people ❌
Pushes down new housing construction ❌
Pushes down building quality ❌

People are panicking for absolutely no reason.
A vanishing number of programs at normal colleges will be affected. This is really just a rule that keeps students at sketchy for-profit schools from getting loans.
Your social science degree is safe!
1. Social Sciences, Art, Music, etc. are geniunely fucked
2. This truly only benefits the Rich.
3. “Paying $150k for a Gender Studies degree makes no sense” Okay, have you asked the universities why it costs so much? Why punish the students who are forced to pay it?

Since I accidentally started a firestorm on Election Twitter (and in various pollster Slacks/chats), a reminder that we've *had* many elections without Trump on the ballot.
These folks are way less likely to vote in those elections. My point is that if they did, we'd miss them.
Great question. Our model is built on a lot of polling — including our own — and it really bothers me how absurdly different the dropoff white respondents are in our polling. Whites who completed our polls swing 10% to the left, and whites who don't....barely swing at all.
I'm guessing this is not unique to our polling. If the model whiffs badly, it'll probably whiff on whites, and it would mean that far more low-propensity Rs showed up to vote.
And it means that the ones who didn't respond to polls were attitudinally very different and shifting far less than the ones who did respond, but were underrepresented in polling, meaning that we way over-project the swing.
I don't think this is the case, though, because those people really hate Trump too — and I don't expect them to show up in a midterm like this. But it nags at me.
What is the new public health crisis, described as an “acoustical assault,” facing one California town?
It’s not gun violence. It’s not a bullet train. It’s…pickleball. Reason’s @BessByers shares how they’ve voted to permanently ban it.

NYT: Former aides describe angry and profane outbursts from Mary Peltola that were directed at aides and sometimes expressed about others who had displeased her.
In one instance, she shoved an aide, according to a former staff member who was present and two others who were told about it at the time.
Four former staff members said they directly heard her use the word “faggot” over the years, in some cases about her own staff members, an allegation the campaign denied.
She also used the word “retarded,” according to former aides and text messages viewed by The New York Times.

Soe Noire Speaks Out: "Y'all...don't give a fuck about ableism."
Soe Noire, the "gender-expansive lesbian and uses he/him pronouns" who in the Globe's epic account of the travails of the Covid-safe lesbian bar, lambasted the "WHITE therapist" for centering "the feelings of a majority white and white adjacent staff," and denounced the debt-ridden owner for "incredibly racist and deflecting behavior," said on Instagram yesterday:
"To the antimaskers and randos coming in to give their useless two cents, you might wanna read a book, check out my story highlights on airbourne illness, before having reactionary tantrums at me. Why should your ignorance be my personal problem? Y'all gave up masking the minute Biden told you too, don't give a fuck about ableism, revolution, or about the effects of Long Covid and their current pandemic in this country. You read a reactionary, surface level article about a conflict and political issue you have no understanding of and are just running your mouths to defend a bar you don't even give a fuck about.
"I am working on the part 2 of my essay (which you should probably read idk) that will have a FULL timeline of events with receipts to back it up. There is a lot of shit that went down that y'all do not know (and judging by some of y'all, don't even care and just want a random nigga on the internet to be mad at today.) Maybe hold off on flooding my comments and DMS on burner accounts and whining about some out of context quotes you read before fixing your fingers to type nonsense. Read my essay, listen to disability advocates, learn about COVID before you start revving up the pitchforks. Or don't, and seethe away I guess. It's your life 😩"
