‘After the Hurricane’ 1988. Last Summer I revisited the site for a video of my early work. It had changed almost beyond recognition; the sense of desolation, mystery and hidden stories gone, replaced by paved walkways, fences and so many people! @thegentleauthor @ahistoryinart

The closeness of Édouard Vuillard's relationship to Lucy Hessel (his dealer's wife) is clear in this picture, from 1905, not least because her face appears in shadow - it's a glimpse into their lives, an intimate and informal moment immortalised for prosperity.

'Drug Store.' (1927) Edward Hopper’s paintings have defined our idea of the modern urban world. In his early years, he studied under Robert Henri and embraced his central teaching: to paint the city and street life he knew best.

This morning I found a puffball and have been unsuccessful in looking for a painting of one. Instead here is a painting of mushrooms (1927) by William Nicholson; his act of observation is a deep, mysterious and beautiful thing.

John Minton was a gifted draughtsman and graphic artist but he is possibly best known today for his lean and angular face, familiar from his doleful self portraits and from Freud’s great likeness of his friend, the glassy eyes filled with sorrow and shifting reflections.

Hay paisajes urbanos que no solo retratan un lugar, sino la memoria y la soledad que habitan en él. La obra de #mishopperianos de hoy, de la artista británica Doreen Fletcher, es puro silencio y nostalgia urbana. 👇🏻Abro hilo.

I've written to Lisa Nandy at DCMS requesting another meeting about Everyone's Art. Progress has stalled. As I wrote in @spectator 80% of our public art is hidden away in storage. spectator.com/article/museum… 'Top of the Wolds,' (1900) by Alfred East,' is stored @NorthamptonShoe
