The DEEPER project is finally on twitter! Follow us for updates on our team and research on #phenotyping, #genetics, & maize #roots.
Eze Benson is visiting Penn State from Nottingham to work on annotating anatomy images for machine learning algorithms in RootScan3D. Check out one of his examples here!
The DEEPER team includes PIs, postdocs, grad students, and staff from four universities: @penn_state, @UniofNottingham, @UWMadison, & @universityofga. Stay tuned to hear what our team members are working on!
DeepGenes incorporates genes and traits related to root architecture, anatomy, and deep rooting discovered through #phenotyping and LEADER into genomic selection models.
Initial #genediscovery was completed through #GWAS of the Wisconsin Diversity panel of inbreds.
Architectural and anatomical root traits are tested and incorporated using in silico modeling in OpenSimRoot. DEEPER aims to incorporate a soil physics model accounting for hardness and penetration ability in OpenSimRoot.
You can find current iterations of OpenSimRoot on @gitlab. Future iterations will be released & publicly available!

3D models are constructed from images of root crowns using Dirt3D. The number and resolution of these images allows for the extraction of phenes, such as root length, number, and diameter.
Our RootRobot will be a tractor driven, automatic device that will excavate and clean root crowns from the field. An imaging station will be used to capture 3600 images of each root crown for analysis. Goodbye shovelomics, hello RootRobot!
Anatomics captures root anatomical traits using laser ablation tomography (LAT) and analysis via #machinelearning algorithms in RootScan3D. Hyperspectral imaging will allow for identification of root composition.
DEEPER will be at @PlantPhenomics #Phenome2019 in February! Make sure to check out posters and talks from our team members including Malcolm Bennett, Natalia De Leon, and Molly Hanlon (@mthanlon).
