🚨 MARYLAND MVA OVERCHARGED DRIVERS FOR REGISTRATION — REFUNDS ISSUED, BUT YEARS OF OVERPAYMENTS REMAIN UNRESOLVED
Maryland motorists are discovering they’ve paid excessive registration fees because the MVA used incorrect vehicle weights. Now questions are mounting over whether the state will return money collected in previous years.
▪️ $142 REFUND: A Volkswagen Jetta owner was charged using the 3,700-plus-pound category despite a manufacturer-confirmed shipping weight of just 2,847 pounds.
▪️ MORE ERRORS: Other drivers received refunds of $82 and $71 after challenging incorrect classifications.
▪️ THIRD-PARTY DATA: MVA traced errors to VINtelligence, a vehicle-information system supplied by Mobility Global.
▪️ PAST OVERPAYMENTS: An MVA employee said leadership had authorized corrections for current renewals, not previous ones. The agency says its broader refund policy remains under review.
▪️ AUDIT SCRUTINY: State lawmakers are questioning the errors, and legislative auditors are examining the issue.
The state collected the money. Drivers discovered the mistakes. Why should motorists have to fight for refunds—and why hasn’t MVA committed to returning every documented overpayment?
