Good coverage on transformer manufacturing in WSJ today. Non-standardized products, skilled labor required, very import-dependent.
U.S. transformer shortage bottleneck: 4-6 week hand-build process by skilled "winders" takes 3-5 years to master, can't be automated.
Hitachi's Virginia plant expanding but needs 800 workers in 34K-person county.
14K unit shortage for large transformers, 123K for distribution units. 80% import dependency.
