We really need to do something about this
I am now convinced the govt needs to use its bully pulpit to try and change parenting norms.
It could be the quid pro quo of banning social media for under 16s. “Ok, we’ve banned this thing you were blaming for your kids problems, so now you have to give them more freedom and responsibility”.
I know people who have their kid’s mock GCSEs in their work calendar. People who nag 18 year olds to do their homework. More than one academic has told me parents of university students asking for meetings with lecturers is now normal. This is all utterly insane.
And let’s be honest, none of this is for the kids benefit. When you put a tracking app on your teenage daughter’s phone it is not for her safety and it is certainly not because she wants it on there. It’s because we’ve normalised parents not allowing the cutting of apron strings that is vital to teenage development.
My positivity for this magical moment in computing is not born out of blind optimism for a possible future, but from awe of the present potential. Everything we've ever wanted to do with software is now possible. We can make anything. We can fix everything.

Err … because Russia invaded Ukraine. Ukraine did not invade Russia.

Nothing but love for my Atari ST friends now, but in the 80s it was war!
If you’ve been watching MKBHD....this guy is a pretty nice upgrade for tech videos 😂
You probably won’t want to go back to MKBHD after watching him

SNP MSP @GeorgeAdam says something which simply isn’t true. The UCL academic cited by Adam subsequently changed his position after I shared my analysis with him. The biases in English and Scottish PISA data are similar, but Scotland has a *more* significant upward bias.

Old post but good one. 🧵
Gene Wolfe said of his early published stories that he considered his worst, "I had not yet learned the difference between 'a good idea' that could be written and perhaps sold and 'a good STORY'."

Note this, in particular:
But @JohnPeterJerrim is simply wrong about that. And you can easily verify that he’s wrong. The excerpt below is from the OECD’s 2022 PISA results publication, available here: oecd.org/en/publications/pis…

SNP MSP @GeorgeAdam says independent analysis of England's Pisa scores suggests they are "inflated" due to dropout rates among "lower-attaining schools".
He says comparing the education systems of England and Scotland is like comparing "apples with oranges".
After more than 10,000 leftists asked for refunds for their tickets to Ed Sheeran's show, Sheeran did something nobody expected: He bought the tickets himself and donated them to VetTix, a free service that gives concert and sporting event tickets to low-income veterans.
"If people don't want to come, that's their right," said Sheeran. "I don't think it's fair to let those seats go empty."
Sheeran has quickly flipped the script on the angry leftists so determined to destroy him.
"I just want to sing my songs and entertain people."
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
This story is satire, not real news. It originated from the Facebook page "America's Last Line Of Defense," whose bio states "Nothing on this page is real." No credible outlet reported Sheeran buying out unsold tickets for VetTix; the quotes attributed to him are fabricated. leadstories.com/hoax-alert/202… facebook.com/ALLODSatire/po…

It's a very reasonable (and correct) view to hold that some causes and charities are more effective than others.
It's an absolutely demented view to hold if that means you say any discretionary spending you choose to make in your life must be forever compared against buying more malaria nets.

The whole Macklemore–Palestine episode has thrown Ed Sheeran’s tour into chaos.
It has raised serious questions.
To what extent should venue owners and concert promoters be able to dictate what an artist can or cannot say on stage?
We should also be alarmed that Ed Sheeran is being “cancelled” because he has not publicly expressed the ‘correct’ opinions strongly enough.
As Ed Sheeran said: “I have my own personal views on this devastating conflict. Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn’t mean I don’t have them.”
Yet, because he does not choose to air those views publicly, the cancel-culture mob are after him.
Now, ClassicHits Radio station in Ireland has refused to play Ed’s music for the foreseeable.

“Free Palestine” can mean anything from “stop bombing Gaza” to “drive all the Jews into the sea”’ depending on how you define the geographical boundaries of Palestine and what you mean by “free”.
That’s why it’s useful as a thought terminating cliche when trying to hold a coalition that includes bleeding heart liberals and jihadists

This has to be one of the dumbest controversies on the internet this week…
Ed Sheeran vs Macklemore.
People bought tickets to hear Ed Sheeran. Not to get lectured by the opener.
Macklemore had two nights at MetLife and used them to turn Ed’s show into his own political event. “Free Palestine,” the protest song, Gaza footage on the screens. That’s not bravery. That’s taking someone else’s stage and making it about you.
And let’s be real about whose stage it was. Ed Sheeran is one of the biggest pop artists alive. Stadiums. Worldwide tours. Songs that actually last. Macklemore had a huge run over a decade ago and has been chasing relevance ever since. That’s why he was opening, not headlining. He didn’t build this tour. He borrowed it.
Then the venues said they wouldn’t host the dates if he stayed on. Kraft and the other owners aren’t required to hand him a microphone. The promoter isn’t required to risk canceling shows and wrecking it for hundreds of thousands of people who paid to Sheeran. He said it wasn’t even his decision. He also said he wasn’t going to blow up the tour, the crew, and the fans because his opener wanted a campaign stop.
That’s not “silence.” That’s not complicity. That’s the headliner refusing to let a support act tank the whole run.
Now the left is doing what it always does. Instant outrage. Instant boycotts. Instant “Ed Sheeran is complicit” posts from people who were never going to that show anyway. It’s performative. It’s the same woke script: hijack something normal, demand everyone clap, then scream when the adults in the room say no.
Macklemore can say whatever he wants on his own stage. He doesn’t get Ed Sheeran’s audience by default. The other openers walking off in solidarity can do that too. Fine. Don’t pretend Sheeran is the villain for keeping a concert a concert.
If you want a rally, throw your own. Don’t crash a Loop Tour date and then act shocked when the venues shut it down.
