Some days I can't answer a question right away. You probably can't either. A quick note saying, “I have this and I'll get back to you tomorrow,” can be enough to let someone else keep moving. People don't need us glued to our inbox. They do need to know they haven't been forgotten.

I've worked with people whose names come up when something really needs to get done. Usually they aren't the loudest person in the room.
They're the person you can hand a problem to and trust to keep you informed.
I think about that when I talk about reliability. It's built in small moments, long before anyone is discussing a promotion.

Before I walk into a decision meeting, I like to ask myself whose view I haven't heard yet. Sometimes the person closest to the work sees a problem the rest of us missed.
It doesn't mean we have to agree with every concern. It means we give ourselves a fair chance to make a better decision.

When you're thinking about the next role, look beyond the title. Who will need something from you on an ordinary day? Who will call when a decision is hard?
I think those questions tell us more about readiness than imagining how the promotion announcement will feel.

One thing I appreciate in a coworker is knowing where things stand without having to ask three times. The news doesn't always have to be good.
If something is running late, tell me while we still have options. I try to offer people that same courtesy.

Get Promoted took more than four years to structure, write, and publish.
Now, with Book #2 — Get Promoted: Execution hitting the market, I’m excited to turn my attention to completing Book #3.
One book became a series. Now it’s time to finish the trilogy.

It took 10 months after the release of my first book, but it’s finally done.
Get Promoted: Execution — How to Become the Obvious Choice is on its way to Amazon!!
This book is about the daily behaviors that build trust, credibility, visibility, and readiness for greater responsibility.
The job title usually comes after the evidence. This book is about building the evidence first.

I’ve sat on hiring panels. I know how frustrating a promotion decision can look from the outside, especially when you’ve done strong work and someone else is selected.
I wrote Get Promoted: How Career Advancement Really Works to show you what decision makers are weighing and how to prepare before the opportunity opens.
It’s the book I would want you to read before your next promotion comes up.

Before chasing a bigger title, ask yourself which parts of your current work give you energy and which ones wear you down. The next job may bring more of both. Knowing that now can help you choose a role you'll actually want to do.

If your promotion plan is “my work will speak for itself,” I hope your work is a better public speaker than most.
Get Promoted explains how leaders actually weigh readiness, trust, timing, and risk—and why doing a good job is only part of the decision.

You see the job posting. You don't see all the quiet judgments that came before it.
I've sat on hiring panels. I wrote Get Promoted to help you understand what leaders are weighing before the interview even begins.

You see the job posting and the interview. You rarely see how leaders decided who looked ready before either one happened.
I wrote Get Promoted: How Career Advancement Really Works to explain that side of promotion decisions.
If you’re ready to stop guessing, read the book.

A promotion isn't automatically a good move. You might get the title and inherit a job you don't want.
Before you chase it, ask where the organization is going—and whether you want to go there.
#GetPromoted #CareerAdvancement
You can win a promotion and still make the wrong career move.
Before you chase the title, find out where the organization is headed and what the role will demand. More responsibility is valuable when it takes you somewhere you actually want to go.

In my experience, internal candidates often skip one of their best advantages: a professional conversation about the role before they apply.
Ask about the challenges and what the hiring manager needs. Then listen.
You also don’t need to turn your promotion plans into a staff meeting. Prepare thoughtfully and keep your strategy close.
#GetPromoted #CareerAdvancement
A job posting can tell you the duties. It can’t tell you everything the hiring manager needs. That’s a lot to ask of fourteen bullet points.
If you work inside the organization, talk to people who know the role. Ask what success would actually look like.
You might learn how to prepare. You might learn you don’t want the job. Both beat guessing.
#GetPromoted #CareerAdvancement
Before you pursue a promotion, take an honest look at the evidence you have.
Which projects did you own? What problems did you solve? Where did your decisions change the outcome? Look for a pattern across your work, not one good week or one difficult assignment you handled well.
Then look at what you still need to learn. Do you understand the demands of the role you want? Which parts could you handle now, and where would you need support?
You don’t have to be flawless to be ready. But if you overlook your gaps, you may ask leadership to take a risk you haven’t fully understood yourself.
An honest assessment gives you something useful: a clearer case for your strengths and a chance to work on what could hold you back.
