We’ve been taught that relationships are difficult because sharing your life with someone means constantly adjusting yourself to accommodate them. But sometimes, the real difficulty comes from being forced to confront parts of ourselves we’ve spent years avoiding. Love brings us face-to-face with generations of conditioning that taught us vulnerability is dangerous, openness is weakness, and letting someone in is a risk we shouldn’t take. For a relationship to truly last, we must be willing to unlearn those fears, confront our past, and allow ourselves to love in ways we may never have seen modeled before.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned about love is that you cannot build a healthy relationship with someone who refuses to reflect on themselves. If a person cannot recognize their unhealthy patterns, acknowledge how they affect their partner, or make an effort to change, creating a peaceful and loving relationship becomes almost impossible. Love alone cannot fix what someone refuses to confront within themselves.

In a healthy relationship, when your partner tells you that something hurt them, you listen with the intention of understanding them and doing better. You don’t turn the conversation into a debate about whether they had a right to feel that way. The goal isn’t to prove that their feelings are unreasonable. It’s to understand what hurt them and make a genuine effort not to repeat it. ❤️
