It's a thing. I think that @HackingLZ's recurring advice to have hobbies outside of IT, hacking, etc. is super duper important for longer time in this field.
EVERY SINGLE person I know who's nothing but cyber security flames out HARD around the 7 year mark.
Don't do that
We all know the “this is fine” meme—when it comes to burnout, it’s anything but. In our newest blog, @confused_binary serves up practical tips to help testers and teams recognize, manage, and avoid going up in flames. Read it now! trustedsec.com/blog/pen-test…

Why should you hate the #UNCybercrimeTreaty? That’s easy–it poses substantial risks to global cybersecurity. It fails to exempt good-faith security research, risking prosecution for security researchers and journalists whose work keeps our digital world safe! eff.org/deeplinks/2024/07/jo…

@GoDaddy @GoDaddyHelp I reported two phishing domains yesterday via email and web form submission. How long does it typically take for a review to complete, for a takedown suspension to occur? Any chance of expediting this?

Last week CBC Marketplace published a report and accompanying video of their hidden camera work at the big 5 Canadian banks exposing some of the heinous sales practices they saw.
I want to break down another claim made in the piece: ‘the average interest you get is at least 10%’. ‘At least’ sets a floor value guarantee – it sounds too good to be true, continue reading.

New: inside the underground site where "neural networks" churn out fake IDs
- I tested, made two IDs in minutes
- used one to successfully bypass the identity verification check on a cryptocurrency exchange
- massive implications for crime, cybersecurity

AI-driven, AI-powered, AI-assisted, AI-enabled attacks
What people do with AI so far:
- write better phishing mails
- create code (like everyone else)
- create scam sites
- sort and filter scan results
So, AI increases their efficiency. It's not a new threat.

⚠️PSA: Curated Intel DFIR teams noticed a severe uptick in Akira Ransomware cases in Jan 2024.
Same repeated TTPs:
- Dwell times of < 4 hours on average
- Cisco ASA VPN for Access
- WinSCP for exfil / WinRAR for compression
- AnyDesk RMM for persistence
- 'w.exe' Akira payload

Exactly the same as what @CuratedIntel’s DFIR analysts are also seeing ⚠️
In the “eight latest IR missions conducted by @Truesec, where Akira ransomware had been deployed, the Cisco Anyconnect SSL VPN was confirmed as the entry point”

If you're heading towards burning out, do whatever it takes to not do that. Even if it means making a lot less money. Do not burn out.
"I'm a proud, happy, Cyber Security Accident." — perfectly said.

The more I meet people and the more I look at habits in the industry, the more I find that:
The folk who didn't plan to be here, are generally WAAAAY better at what they do than the folks that aspired to be in cyber security.
I'm a proud, happy, Cyber Security Accident.

You can build a whole career in the fast lane by literally just finding the shitty but important problems nobody wants to solve and fixing them
I saw a few videos where Americans got pop/soda drinks with their breakfast at different takeout restaurants.
Do Americans commonly drink pop/soda drinks in the morning, with breakfast?

If you work in information security or threat intelligence… *publicly* and *repeatedly* dunking on cyberattack victims isn’t cool.
If it’s your role and responsibility to defend people, turning around and making fun of others is not okay. It comes across as malicious, bitter, and petty.
We’re all in this together.
There’s a time and place for constructive criticism. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Many of your concerns are valid. They’re especially impactful if they’re expressed in an appropriate way.
There’s also a time and place for memes. Trust me, I get it. The ~irony~ of certain situations makes it almost impossible not to laugh. (Or, facepalm.) Be tasteful and show good judgment.
I’ve sometimes seen the above manifest in something that can only be described as a mean-spirited and spiteful celebration of someone else’s misfortune. It’s inconsiderate and unsympathetic.
Don’t encourage or engage in victim blaming. We’re all vulnerable. You might revel in schadenfreude today, but find yourself the victim of a compromise tomorrow. Cyber karma is real.
It really does feel like some of y’all are rooting for the adversary at times. It’s a bad look. It’s not cool and I don’t want to see it.
Just an observation over the past few days.
(To be clear, this applies to the minority of researchers. That minority can be really loud sometimes. In my experience, there are so many more people in this industry who are kind, decent, and professional. You are appreciated and valued.)

Twitter has had the sim swap password reset security flaw since before your new owners, and you can blame your users (or the old owners!) all you want but you still have to fix the problem. So go fix it.
We can confirm that the account @SECGov was compromised and we have completed a preliminary investigation. Based on our investigation, the compromise was not due to any breach of X’s systems, but rather due to an unidentified individual obtaining control over a phone number associated with the @SECGov account through a third party. We can also confirm that the account did not have two-factor authentication enabled at the time the account was compromised. We encourage all users to enable this extra layer of security. More information and tips on how to keep your account secure can be found in our Help Center: help.x.com/en/safety-and-sec…

A few years ago, I was burned out to the point where I had nothing left for myself or my family. I was forced to make drastic changes in my life.
Does that sound like you?
I made a series of short videos talking about my experience with burnout and recovering from it. 1/4
