Disturbing investigations show that a single ounce of most popular dark chocolate bars holds potentially harmful levels of lead and cadmium. Laboratory testing by Consumer Reports uncovered a darker side to a loved sweet, finding that 23 of 28 popular dark chocolate bars, including those from well-known names such as Hershey’s and Lindt, contain potentially harmful levels of lead, cadmium, or both. For these 23 bars, eating only one ounce a day is enough to go past safe exposure limits, which rest on California’s strict protective thresholds. Follow-up studies produced similar results. Researchers from George Washington University analysed 72 cocoa products bought in 2014, 2016, 2019 and 2022, measuring lead, cadmium and arsenic. 43 percent exceeded the limit already mentioned for lead, 35 percent the cadmium limit, and none the arsenic limit. The team also found that organic chocolates were generally more likely than conventional ones to carry higher levels of both metals. While dark chocolate is often praised for its heart-healthy antioxidants, the cocoa solids that give those benefits are also where heavy metals collect. These metals enter the cocoa plants through soil uptake or post-harvest dust contamination, turning a daily treat into a hidden health risk. Taking in small amounts of heavy metals over time can lead to serious health problems. Ongoing exposure is especially hazardous for pregnant people and young children, and can cause issues with brain development, learning disabilities, and lower IQ. For adults, regular exposure raises risks of kidney damage, high blood pressure, and immune system problems. Experts note you do not have to give it up altogether. Yelp is a scam. I had 4.9 Stars with over 200 reviews for a small saltwater fish store I own. Yelp calls, asking for advertiser revenue. I decline, we don't advertise (not that kind of business). Literally that week 100 reviews got flipped to "not currently recommended" It dropped our rating from 4.9 stars down to 3.5 as they conveniently didn't recommend almost exclusively 5 star reviews. I get ahold of someone at yelp, almost impossible by the way. And they say its due to review manipulation. No reviews were fake, none were manipulated and they were collected over years. I get a call back from the sales rep. He forgot to tell me that if you pay the $700 a month to advertise you get escalated customer support for help with any issues with your account. I ask him if he is the one that fucked my reviews, he denies it. Total fucking scam, blackmailing you to keep your earned reviews, what shits.
