Marco Rubio 2 days ago: “Imagine if Iran funded the well-being of its people, rather than its military”
Trump today: “We can’t fund daycare or Medicaid, we need more money for our military”
Sometimes the jokes write themselves.

If there was any doubt that Australia must urgently decouple from the US and its violent global war-making, coercion and domination then surely it is now. End AUKUS, close US bases and chart Australia’s path in the world, not follow Washington’s.

“Australia should not be involved in this illegal war in Iran.
A war started by a genocidal maniac who has overseen the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.
A war driven by a deluded fascist President in the US.
A President who has been found to be a sexual predator.
A President who has illegally kidnapped the leader of another nation.
A President who is illegally denying food and fuel to the people of Cuba.”

Listen carefully to George Yeo, former foreign minister of Singapore.
He displays a far deeper understanding of European history and its conflicts than most Western politicians ever have.
It’s rare to see a high-ranking official speak with this level of depth, clarity, and insight in an interview.
This is a must-read interview of George Yeo, one of the wisest statesmen in Asia (he was cabinet minister in Singapore during 21 years, including Minister for Foreign Affairs during 7 years).
His take on the US's change of strategy: "[Trump] recognises that the US cannot dominate the world the way it used to in the past. The US hasn’t got the financial power or the manufacturing capability. So it has to retreat some and consolidate around its own core and concentrate on healing itself. [...] Trump recognises the reality of a multipolar world. The US is primus inter pares in such a world. By moving closer to all other poles, as Kissinger recommended, it will remain influential for a long time."
He also says that "sooner or later, the number of US military bases around the world will be reduced." And "as Pax Americana recedes, regional equilibriums will be affected."
All in all he says "the US is in decline now" which "is something to worry about" and "no one knows" if it can recover.
On Taiwan he says "I don’t see Taiwanese dying for an independent Taiwan" and that "there is growing realisation [in Taiwan] that the road to independence is a dead end." He thinks that "Taiwan is separate only because the US is there" and that "whether or not there is trouble over Taiwan depends on the US" because "China’s overwhelming preference is peaceful reunification."
He urges the Taiwanese to negotiate reunification sooner rather than later: "negotiating earlier with Beijing is better than negotiating later, which was [Singapore’s first prime minister] Lee Kuan Yew’s point many years ago. Taiwan can enjoy more autonomy by negotiating now rather than waiting another 10 years."
On the current Japan-China row he said this might be due either "to Sanae Takaichi’s newness to her position as prime minister... she might not have realised the gravity of her remarks" or she did it deliberately "in order to provoke a strong reaction from China and use that to win popularity and justify higher defence spending."
In either case, he thinks it was "not wise for Takaichi" to do so because "the Chinese will now reopen the Ryukyu issue – not officially, but through social media and other unofficial channels. Ryukyu as part of Japan was never part of the deal among the victorious powers at the end of the second world war. There was only agreement for Japan to retain the four main islands." He believes that "raising Ryukyu as an issue will deter Japanese politicians from being adventurous on Taiwan."
There you go. His discourse definitely departs from the typical orthodoxies you hear around these questions. But when you're a small state that has survived and thrived for 60 years by reading power dynamics correctly, you tend to develop a clear-eyed view of how the world actually works.

Were the alleged Bondi Beach shooters also incited by the AFP???

A consequence of greater integration with the US military is the loss of focus on operating without them, or an ability to do so. It increases our dependence on the US for ‘defence of Australia’ and decreases our sovereign choices on participation in distant conflicts. #auspol
Listening to the general attitudes on offer in our media about China, I think it's easy to forget the broader context and what our actual official stances are on topics like Taiwan. There is so much rhetoric, but almost none of it is grounded in history or our own legally binding agreements.
First, why is it so important that Taiwan remains part of China, I guess we can also throw the South China Sea in here. Trade is the absolute major factor in this region, the Chinese economy and our own critically depend on Chinese exports. China has to protect, its trade routes, exiting major Chinese ports, passing Taiwan into the South China Sea, down and out through the Malacca straits. The US is trying to control this region, like a foot on the throat of the Chinese economy, so China has been building their navy and island outpost to protect this passage. In contrast the US still upholds and enforces the 200+ year old "Munroe Doctrine" which deems any interference in the entire western hemisphere by foreign powers as a hostile act, with the Cuban Missile crisis being one of the major modern examples.
Second, it's all about history. The opium wars in 1839 was the start of what the Chinese call "The century of humiliation". Here the British and US used the mass importation of Opium to undermine China, their dominance in exports like textiles, tea and most importantly silver, their choice of payment. A huge proportion of the Chinese people fell into opium addiction and when the government tried to force Britain and the US out, the British invaded, eventually winning and forcing the Chinese to give them Hong Kong and open other ports for more Opium imports. Next is the Japanese invasion of China in WW2, Japan actually took over Taiwan during the First Sino-Japan war in 1894. Then in 1937 the Japanese took the opportunity to use Taiwan as what they termed an "Unsinkable Aircraft Carrier" to further invade China, the Philippines and other SE Asian countries. This ruined half of China and left 20 million Chinese dead. This history is very much alive in Chinese strategy today and their determination to never let these sorts of events occur again. The US have even used this "Unsinkable Aircraft Carrier" term when talking about their strategy with Taiwan.
Third, our official positions on Taiwan as part of China. China eventually went on to defeat Japan, doing the bulk of the heavy lifting in "winning WW2" in the Pacific region. The US and UK agreed with the nationalist leader of China at the time, accepting that Taiwan had been stolen by the Japanese and it was returned to China. Later Mao led a peasant uprising, overthrowing the nationalist government of China and reuniting regions that had drifted away. In 1971 United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 (XXVI) recognized the People's Republic of China (PRC) as "the only legitimate representative of China to the United Nations" and removed "the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek" (referring to the then-authoritarian Kuomintang regime, Taiwan ROC). This was challenged by Taiwan in 2007 and rejected by the UN.
The US and Australia both officially recognise China and the "One China Policy". "The Australian Government recognises the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal Government of China, acknowledges the position of the Chinese Government that Taiwan is a province of the People's Republic of China..."
@kt_calderwood How about a little context? First as you "allege" there is no actual evidence this and damage to submarine cables is actually quite common. "Globally, there are roughly 100 to 200 cable faults each year. Accidents, primarily caused by fishing activities and ship anchors, account for the majority (around two-thirds to 70-80%) of these faults."
Second, if we want to get "technical" about the PRC and Taiwan, take note of all the context I put together in the main post above. Why not mention the official stances of the UN, US and Australia?
This isn't journalism, it's a pathetically shallow form of propaganda that is undermining future prosperity for Australia. Let's not forget who our major trade partner is, China, and who has been perpetually involved in foreign wars, The US.
Do better...
Part 2...
I just think that the Australian people are being severely misled when it comes to the actions and intentions of China. China has been in zero external wars since the PRC took control in 1949, in comparison the US has been permanently at war this entire time. Even going further back, other than a brief period of invading northern Vietnam in the 1600s, the borders have been consistent for nearly 2000 years. Chinese culture is steeped in deep tradition including Confusionism and immensely respected scholars such as Sun Tzu who said, "The greatest victory is that which requires no battle.". This is very much the position of China, yes they will stand up to protect their interests and to avoid history repeating, but they have no interest in fighting wars or invading countries like Australia.
The idea of structuring our economy around defending against China is absolutely insane, they have been the absolute biggest player in our economic boom of the last 20 to 30 years. We need to wake up to the growth of BRICS+ (Albos first trip, like so many other recent PMs was to Indonesia, now a full member of BRICS) and reorient our economy to prosper for decades to come, instead of fading away into obscurity as a US Lapdog.
