A must listen
“Maybe voters are sick and tired of that.”
Reporters hammer @Dave_Eby with hardball questions following Monday morning presser.

I can attest and have seen this first hand. Lots of rich ppl just spend their type hyper optimizing their lives but turns out its never fulfilling anyway
The antidote to this is to keep your lifestyle scrappy and find real challenges, avoid other non-productive rich people friends
Here’s a story about some of the richest guys I know of and how addicted they get to buying things and how that makes them very boring.
Stop one - be early at a $100B company and make > $50M.
Step two - gotta upgrade the apartment. Spend a year of your life really thinking through HOAs and bed/bath splits, the perfect location, a major life upgrade.
Then you move into the apartment and find a bunch of stuff you need to change. So you spend three months picking out anew high end fridge and the perfect jacuzzi tub.
But then you realize that your whole style is kind of whack so you spend 9 months with interior designers buying new furniture. The apartment looks good. Ok.
Step three - energy fades and you see a friend with a nice watch. Now you bombard the group chat with watch chat for 18 months. You get a Rolex. You get an AP. You scratch the AP. You resell the Rolex and brag about the markup which is .001% of your net worth.
Step four - you’re getting itchy again. Ok have a kid. Spend six months compulsively thinking through night nurses and other luxury options. Baby is born and you start microdosing because you’re bored. Take the wife and the night nurse to Mallorca 6 weeks in and complain to Russian oligarchs about inflation and talk about what night nurses are like in Minsk.
Step five - you’re have a kid so now you need to buy a house. Spend a year buying house. Every spare second is looking at Zillow. Buy the house. Spend a year adding new stuff to it. Deal with several pest infestations. Rotate through three landscapers. Complain constantly that it’s hard to find good help.
Step six - buy several cars to fill the driveway. Several more watches. Nothing quite makes you feel right. Start making subtle comments that your wife is annoying you. Strike out at a bar. Have another kid to ignore what you’re destined to become.
Step seven - start balding. Spend more and more time with guys who are on their second marriage. Talk about watches but you’re really talking about wives.
…etc.
All because the money was supposed to make you feel good and it never did.

In Victoria Beacon Hill the best anti-NDP vote is a vote for @BCGreens. The Conservative candidate will be excluded from caucus if elected, there is no @VoteCentreBC candidate. Most everywhere else in B.C., the best anti-NDP vote is a @BCConservCaucus candidate. #BCPoli.
If you’re at all interested in what’s going on in France check this episode out of oddlots.
One of the main political parties is proposing a constitutional change that would prevent political parties from exceeding certain fiscal guardrails to maintain solvency for the nation.

If anyone trips you up down the road for posting inappropriate opinions on social media just say you were being “facetious”
No one’s gonna question that shit cause no one really knows what it means and are too scared to ask or will feel like the joke was over their head
Something I hear over and over again this election is (from traditionally NDP voters)
“I cannot vote for the NDP because they’ve destroyed the province, but I cannot possibly vote for the conservatives either because they’re dysfunctional”
There’s this internal dissonance between what people ARE and who they TELL their friends they ARE
I think the internal conflict will resolve with more BC cons votes in the voter box (than currently are represented in the polls) because you are your true self when no one else is around

I cannot emphasize this enough. If there is a toilet in your dream, DO NOT use it.

I’ve been digging into the French wealth tax which I think might be an eventual reality for the rest of the developed western world Canada included (especially if we continue on a path fiscal indulgence)
If you had a $30m NW and realized $500k in income (today) you’d have to start realizing about $1.34m per year to maintain the same after tax income (if this happens)
It’s a permanent impairment to your safe withdrawal rate of about 1.3%, which assuming 3.5%, almost doubles what you need to retire on.
These were the details:
-applied to households with networths of over 800,000 Euros
-private business shares mostly exempted
-primary residences had a 30% discount
-starting at 0.5% per year, progressively increasing to 1.5% at a maximum
-some provisions to maximum income tax + wealth tax can’t exceed 75% of your income
Things to consider
-it’s politically unpopular to index the inclusion amount for inflation so eventually it affected A LOT of houses
-if you’re a wealthy entrepreneur RRSPs don’t make a ton of sense, but in a future wealth tax scenario they might be the best asset you have
-private assets are much more difficult to value, so their true value can be understated on a return
There’s a new “Zucman tax” being proposed in France on households with more than $100m Euros which would levy a yearly tax of 2%
We’ll see how all this shakes out but if it works somewhere, assume it will be implemented everywhere.
This is the new political forefront and can assume will be wildly popular amount progressives.

David Eby says he will not fire NDP Richmond-Bridgeport candidate Linda Li.
In June, the real estate regulator fined Li $8,500 after a conflict of interest investigation in which she misled investigators and withheld information. #bcpoli #vanRE

He got the tap on the shoulder
NEW - @UBCIC grand chief Stewart Phillip says he only endorses @Emily_Lowan in her run to be MLA for Saanich North and the Islands, but endorses @bcndp and @Dave_Eby overall to form government.
Follows confusion in which it appeared he was endorsing the @BCGreens
