I’m very concerned about reports of an income tax raid on family businesses in the upcoming Budget. It is reported that the Treasury is considering changing the rules to make family businesses pay income tax rather than CGT when they pass their business on to the next generation. But they would still pay the lower CGT rate if they sold their business to non-family! As I argued in the House of Lords last Thursday, family businesses are the backbone of Britain’s economy. Another tax hike on these job creators would be an unmitigated disaster. They are the backbone of their local communities, and need to be protected. telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

After last night’s underwhelming nationwide broadcast (‘naze’ was how one critic described it), President Macron has left for a three-day Gulf trip to Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Qatar. Meanwhile the gilet jaunes have called for another mass nationwide protest next Saturday.

The BBC is broken. Calling the riots in France “mostly peaceful” tells you everything you need to know. Reform will scrap the TV licence fee.

A YouGov survey of financiers collectively controlling more than £30trn of assets has found that a “sharp tax rise” on companies or investors would cause a third of them to “consider pausing, reducing or stopping all UK investment over the next 12 months”. The overwhelming majority — 78% — said the government was not giving them a strong enough reason to commit capital and 58% said the UK had become less attractive for investment decision-makers over the past 5 years. It's investment that leads to higher growth and higher productivity. It's higher productivity that leads to higher wages. Labour's policies are leading to lower investment and stagnant wages. It's a recipe for pauperisation of the country.

It’s wrong on all counts. I would no more depend on the BBC’s coverage of France than I would Putin on Russia.
The BBC has given up claiming that the riots in France are about education and now says they are about “the cost of living and other issues”.

Despite endless warnings of impending catastrophe, humanity produces more food than ever. And far fewer children are dying from hunger. This doesn't mean there are no problems. But it shows how innovation, economic growth, and human ingenuity can make the world dramatically better. fraserinstitute.org/despite-…

In just 9 hours, probably a lot less, Daniel 👇has found a complete workaround for a stupid, malicious and punitive tax. Now tell me this government has a clue what it is doing. 🤦🏻‍♀️ * I have no family business to inherit or pass on but this strikes me as very interesting for those that do
1. Kids set up a new company that becomes the marketing agency for the family business. 2. The marketing agency collects a fee that dramatically reduces the profit in the parents company. 3. The marketing agency acquires a minority stake with savage voting rights. 4. Independent valuation shows that this structure makes the business almost worthless. 5. The marketing company acquires the remaining shares. Success in the UK is now 50% being excellent at what you do and 50% avoiding the governments latest scheme to derail the success and independence of your family.

Labour is planning another major assault on family businesses by charging them 45% income tax when passing shares to children. KPMG said it had “significant concerns” that the plans risked “discouraging intergenerational transfers of ownership”. John Endacott, a partner at chartered accountants PKF Francis Clark, warned that “long-standing family companies are still adjusting to the inheritance tax changes. Further taxes on passing businesses to the next generation risk taxing them to extinction.” Let's remember that there are some 5.1m family firms across the UK constituting 93.2% of all private sector businesses. They support 15.8m jobs, 57% of total private sector employment. They generate £2.8 trillion in annual turnover, representing nearly half of the UK private sector total and contribute £985 billion in Gross Value Added GVA (equivalent to roughly 59% of private sector GVA). They pay in £422 billion in total taxes to the Exchequer. The more they have to pay in tax in order to transfer ownership to the next generation, the less money there is for investment and expansion. Along with the imposition of the death tax on family firms, this policy is a dagger to the heart of British business. Why is Labour doing it...........? 1/2

Labour don't believe that money you earn, or the property that you own, is really yours. If you leave property empty for 6 months, they'll let councils steal it. If you put money aside for your pension, they'll decide how it's invested. And now they're after your business.

🚨 NEWS: A proposed asylum centre in a North Yorkshire village of just 700 residents could cost British taxpayers more than £270 million, according to new estimates from local campaigners. Labour is considering housing up to 1,200 asylum seekers at the former RAF Linton-on-Ouse base, with estimated costs reaching between £443 and £853 per occupied bed per night. Campaigners warn the site could operate for just 23 months before being returned to the Ministry of Defence. Labour promised to save taxpayers money by closing asylum hotels. Now it must explain how spending potentially hundreds of millions on another accommodation site represents value for money.

🤦🏻‍♀️ you can’t buy stupid Packham would send the wealthy out of the country so there are fewer taxpayers, less revenue and we have to borrow more to stay the same. Couldn’t make it up. (It hasn’t exactly worked well in France, with its riots, which has a property wealth tax (up to 1.5% on property worth over €1.3m), having scrapped full wealth tax (of up to 1.5% on all assets) in 2017 because it caused “massive capital flight” to neighbouring countries with 60,000+ millionaires leaving, taking €200bn+ with them and causing an annual fiscal shortfall of €7bn by raising less than it cost)
If I was Prime Minister , if I was Burnham , watching European cities ablaze . . . I’d instigate a ‘wealth tax’ at about 9.01am tomorrow morning . Just saying . Or should we just ‘eat cake’ ?

And you care not whether closing those gaps means improving anything for anyone, or just chopping down tall poppies.
As Education Secretary, I am fully focused on closing the gaps that appear, even in early childhood. Reimagining childhood and rewiring the state so that outcomes for children drive what we do - that’s what this government is all about.
