Nearly four years ago a 20 year old girl was trapped under a car on New Year's night and dragged through Delhi for about 13 km. Today six of the seven accused are out on bail and the trial has still not ended. Her name was Anjali Singh, from Mangolpuri in Delhi. Her father had died years earlier. Her mother lost her job in Covid. Anjali was the second of six children and the main earner of the family. She worked at weddings and events. On 1 January 2023, around 1.30 am, she was riding home on her scooter with her friend Nidhi. In Sultanpuri a car with five men hit them. Nidhi fell aside. Anjali got stuck under the car. According to police, the driver stopped, got out, saw her under the car, and drove on. Her body was found hours later in Kanjhawala. 11 policemen were suspended for negligence that night. In April 2023 police filed an 800 page chargesheet against seven people. In July 2023 the court ordered murder charges against four of them, including the driver. Then the case stalled. Nidhi, the main witness, did not appear in court for 15 months. Anjali's family moved out of their home. In October 2025 a tribunal ordered the car's insurance company to pay her family ₹36.69 lakh. Today six of the seven accused are out on bail. In September 2026 the Delhi High Court refused bail to the driver. It said the way she was killed was too grave to let him out. The trial is still going on.
